The Nun II is a 2023 American gothic supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves, with a screenplay written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper. The Conjuring Universe franchise's ninth installment and a sequel to The Nun (2018).
Bad Qualities
- First off, the film didn't need a sequel since the original didn't end on a cliffhanger, and it got a 5.3/10 on IMDb and a 24% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Just like the first Nun movie, this film has so many mediocre jumpscares that you stop getting scared of them, and it ruins the fun. Not to mention that the jumpscares are very obvious to the point where it's not effective anymore.
- Some things don't make a lick of sense. Why do the minor characters die instantly while the major characters don’t die at all?
- Nothing about the movie is unique or new; it’s just your average jump-scare-fest of a film like the first one.
- Sometimes they will overuse special effects, which can ruin the film for some people.
- The movie can be quite boring and slow-paced at times, despite being 110 minutes long, which is longer than the first Nun movie at 96 minutes.
- Just like a lot of stereotypical horror films, the characters make very dumb and nonsensical decisions just for the plot.
- This film made a huge mistake by not building enough connections between the nun and Irene, the main protagonist of both movies.
- The characters weren’t thought out and can make the audience uninterested in why they should care about these people.
- This film has a lot of clichés and tropes you would see in a lot of horror movies, another reason why this film was very uninteresting.
- It doesn't add anything to the Conjuring franchise, nor of its premise.
- Very poor CGI which is very obvious throughout the film.
Good Qualities
- The actors made a comeback and gave a good performance, as usual.
- Some people consider it an improvement from the first movie.
- Some scenes were shot nicely.
- Great music composed by Marco Beltrami.
Reception
Like the previous film, the film received mixed reviews from critics since its premiere on September 8, 2023, with a 6/10 rating on IMDb, 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 2/5 on Common Sense Media. It does, however, have an 89% rating on Google.
