The Quintessential Quintuplets (Japanese: 五等分の花嫁, Hepburn: Go-Tōbun no Hanayome, lit. "Five Equal Bride(s)") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Negi Haruba. It was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from August 2017 to February 2020. The series is published in English by Kodansha USA under the Kodansha Comics imprint.
Plot
High school student Futaro Uesugi is an academically gifted student that leads a difficult life — his mother has died, he has no friends, and on top of all that, his father has incurred a large amount of debt.
An opportunity presents itself when the rich Nakano family transfers to his school. Futaro is promptly hired as a highly-paid tutor. However, much to Futaro's dismay, he discovers that his five charges — identical quintuplet sisters of varied personalities — have no interest in studying at all and have abysmal grades. Some of the quintuplets are against having Futaro, whom they view as a stranger, in their apartment, but Futaro's diligent tenacity gradually convinces those girls to accept him and to improve their grades.
Why It Has Passed The Exams
- The entire premise of the series somewhat gets a different take compared to other harem genres: a male student gets a part time job by being a tutor and tries to get five girls to study.
- The Nakano quintuplets are cute, sometimes complex, and lovable:
- Ichika is the first and the eldest sister of the Nakano Quintuplets. Despite the negligible age difference among them, she took the role of the eldest sister properly.
- Nino is the second eldest sister of the quintuplets. She usually acts as the mother of the family, she cooks for them and takes care of their medical needs, but somewhat rebellious towards Fuutaro.
- Miku is the third sister, she is a silent and reserved girl. Miku tends to have a pessimistic attitude and little confidence regarding herself.
- Yotsuba, the fourth sister, is a bright and cheerful personality, but an airhead compared to the rest.
- Itsuki is the fifth and the youngest sister of the quintuplets. She may be serious and diligent, yet she's also a glutton and crybaby.
- The opening is catchy.
- Great animation.
- Sexy character designs for the quintuplets.
- The series' main protagonist, Fuutaro, while sometimes dense, strict and a bit of a killjoy, he is very hardworking and has a very high amount of patience; especially when getting the attention of the quintuplets and tutoring them despite various amounts of failures and setbacks.
- Amazing voice acting, as Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Fuutaro (Kirito from the Sword Art Online series and Sora/Riku Dola from No Game No Life), Kana Hanazawa as Ichika (Rize Kameshiro from Tokyo Ghoul and Red Blood Cell from Cells At Work!), Taketsu Ayane as Nino (Kirino Kousaka from OreImo: My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute!, Kaede Kayano from Assassination Classroom, and Yuzu Aihara from Citrus), Miku Itou as Miku (Maple from Nekopara), Ayane Sakura as Yotsuba (Nao Tomori from Charlotte, Cocoa Hoto from Is the Order a Rabbit?, and Uraraka Ochako from My Hero Academia) and Inori Minase as Itsuki (Chino Kafuu from Is the Order a Rabbit? and Rem from Re: Zero).
- Even the English dub is also great.
- Miku's pout itself became a meme too.
- So far, each quintuplet get their own development:
- Most notably Nino is the most developed so far, putting behind her hatred for Fuutaro by cutting her hair short, and wanting to be closer to him.
- Miku is the first one to acknowledge Fuutaro's teachings and feelings, and also wants to grow closer to him.
Failing Qualities
- Nino may act mean spirited towards Fuutaro, but she does get development as she grows to him in the second season.
- The animation can feel clunky and dated at times, but fortunately, the blu-ray versions improved it as such.
