"The Shell" is the twentieth episode of Season 3 of The Amazing World of Gumball. It is the 96th episode overall.
Summary
After accidentally cracking open Penny's shell, Gumball encourages her to show the world who she really is.
Why It Rocks
- This episode is known for Gumball and Penny sharing their first kiss.
- It is the first episode to break the status-quo because Gumball and Penny become a couple after this episode.
- It has a great moral about how you shouldn't hide who you really are, that you should be yourself and that your looks do not define who you are.
- Heartwarming moments:
- Gumball helping Penny be herself.
- The Watterson family showing sympathy for Gumball's situation.
- It has a lot of funny moments, especially in the Richard scenes.
- There were some awesome moments during the chase:
- Gumball chewing Patrick out and requesting him to "pop the hood" so Gumball can rescue Penny.
- At the highway, just as the pest controller was able to use tranquilizer on Penny, Patrick rams into the controller's van to make him miss his shot and allowing Gumball to catch up to Penny.
- Gumball making Penny turn into a small creature to avoid getting hit by a truck.
- It is an amazing character development episode for Penny and Gumball.
- Great animation and voice-acting, as usual.
- The design of the unshelled fairy Penny is beautiful, and it makes the viewer wonder why she's been hiding it this whole time.
- The hilarious scene where Gumball comes into Banana Joe's bedroom watching an orange being peeled.
- Good ending: When wolf Penny asks Gumball if he could really love her, he assures her that her looks do not who she is but rather, just how she feels. Gumball then finally admits his true feelings for her by kissing her which makes Penny feel beautiful and joyful again and so, she reverts back to her default form as a fairy. The two then embrace their mutual love and they gaze at each other affectionately.
Bad Qualities
- Patrick Fitzgerald is somewhat unlikable at the beginning of the episode. Fortunately, he does put things right by helping Gumball catch up to Penny and allow the blue cat to calm her down.
- Continuity error: In the episode, "The Meddler", Penny says that she is a peanut but here, she is revealed to be a shape-shifting fairy. Given the context of the scene, though, this is justified. Speaking of continuity errors, as cited above, Patrick disapprove of Gumball until the end despite getting on good terms with him in "The Date" and "The Knights".
