The Thief and the Cobbler (briefly retitled as Arabian Knight in 1995) is a 1993 animated fantasy film directed by Richard Williams, famous for animating Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It was in production for 29 years before Williams was kicked out by The Completion Bond Company. It was then sold to Miramax, who heavily edited the film for release. It received mixed reviews from critics, getting a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise for its animation and cast, but criticism for its songs and similarities to Aladdin (despite Aladdin starting production later).

Why It Will Never Be An Arabian Knight

  1. It ruins Williams's original vision for the film. One example of this is that instead of being a mostly silent film as he intended, it adds voices to all the silent characters, which is completely unnecessary as they are either saying something that is already obvious from the animation, or they are saying something that is barely related to what is happening (The Thief does this often). What's even worse is that sometimes, they didn't even bother to animate the mouths!
  2. Horrible and bland songs added by Miramax to compete with Aladdin. "Am I Feeling Love" is the worst offender.
  3. Some of the animation is inconsistent due to some unfinished animation being cheaply finished by Miramax.
  4. Terrible added dialogue by Miramax, especially from The Thief. Things are mentioned that do not exist in the film's period, such as Disneyland and airplanes.
  5. The movie flopped at the box office so badly, it was quickly pulled out of theaters and sold as a DVD in a Froot Loops box.

Good Qualities

  1. The original version, which is available online as The Recobbled Cut, lacks many of the bad qualities mentioned above, and is faithful to Williams's vision for the film.
  2. The animation, while inconsistent at times, is still good.
  3. Great voice acting.
