The Walking Dead: Destinies is a 2023 action adventure game based on the TV series on the same name. Unique to this game is that it retells the events of the first four seasons of The Walking Dead, but you can choose what outcome you want in the story.
Plot
Change the course of AMC's The Walking Dead history. Fight walkers, relive iconic moments, and change the destiny of The Walking Dead Universe as your choices separate heroes from villains, and the living from the dead. Will you make the same choices as Rick, or will you forge your own path?
Why It's Destined to Be Dead
- Putrid graphics on par with a PS2/PS3 game, although not as bad as Skull Island: Rise of Kong.
- Similar to Redfall, cutscenes are portrayed in slideshows that don't explain what's going on in the scene.
- There's one scene of Rick finding out his wife Lori is dead and it's more hilarious than it is depressing.
- Bug and glitches galore, such as walkers phasing into the ground, walkers being stuck on the curb, walkers getting stuck behind other walkers, Hershel walking perfectly even though his leg is amputated after getting bit, the list goes on.
- When your health is very low, the game activates a mechanic that randomizes your outcome, escapes from the walker, and you have to dodge walkers in order to get your health back up because if you encounter another walker, your character will be lunch to the walkers. Most of these outcomes will make your character useless.
- Panicked only allows you to dodge in which you cannot attack or shoot them with your weapons, making your character very useless and they will end up dying if you encounter another walker.
- Wrathful only allows you to use melee weapons, while somewhat useful to hit a walker, if there is a herd of walkers, you're pretty much screwed.
- Aside from Lori, T-Dog, Sophia, Beth, and Andrew's actors, none of the other actors reprise their roles and some of their replacements do a horrible job with their characters.
- Clunky combat, weapons lack impact and stabbing feels stiff.
- AI is also atrocious, with enemy soldiers not seeing you even when close up to them.
- Despite the fact that the game is based on the first four seasons of The Walking Dead, several characters and key moments do not appear.
- Morgan only shows up once and disappears for the rest of the game.
- Morgan's son Duane, Andrea, Amy, Jacqui, Morales, Otis, Patricia, Jimmy, Ed, the prisoners aside from Andrew, and Tyreese's group are absent.
- Rick's group never arrives at the CDC or come into conflict with the Living.
- Despite the fact that your choices matter, the ending is still the same regardless of who lives or dies.
- Adding onto the above statement, we don't get to see how our choices play out in seasons 5-11 because the game only adapts the first four seasons. This implies that the game was rushed to meet a deadline.
Redeeming Qualities
- The choice system is a great mechanic for this Walking Dead game, though the Telltale games are far superior than this.
- This game had potential to be great if it was delayed for about another year or two.
- This game can be so bad, it's actually funny.
Reception
"You fucked it up!/You done fucked it up!" |
On this game release, the game received a negative reception and it was criticized for its bugs and glitches, combat, story and graphics.
Angry Joe listing the worst games of 2023 and it gave a 2/10, a same rating as Skull Island: Rise of Kong.
