The Warriors is a 2005 action-adventure beat 'em up game based on the 1979 movie of the same name. It was developed by Rockstar Toronto and published by Rockstar Games. The first half of the game follows an original story that explains the rise in the Warriors' popularity until eventually leading up to the fateful shooting that kicked off the film.
Why It's A Warrior
- It's very faithful to the movie in terms of tone and style, it's neither always comedic nor always dark, it's a virtually perfect mix of both.
- Instead of following the story of the movie to a tee, it spends a great deal of time exploring the origins of how the Warriors were founded, how specific members came to join (in optional extra levels), and so on.
- Many actors from the movie reprise their roles for this game, notably James Remar as Ajax, Michael Beck as Swan, Dorsey Wright as Cleon, Deborah Van Valkenburgh as Mercy, and David Patrick Kelly as Luther among many others.
- On that note, the voice acting is top-notch.
- Cleon plays a more major role in the game, as opposed to the movie where he was killed early on.
- Fun, fast-paced gameplay. You can have multiple other warriors in your group to help out against hoodlums or rival gangs, you can grab enemies and have allies land devastating hits (or vice versa), use a wide variety of weapons against enemies, and even grab them and use the environment to land harder hits.
- Wide variety of gameplay in its many quests.
- The first half of the game (the one not based directly on the movie) is a more open experience where you can do just about anything at the Warriors' base on Coney Island.
- Amazing graphics for its time.
- The other gangs get more importance in this game and also get their awesome title cards.
- Police generally try to arrest you, unlike the other rivals. If you get handcuffed, a fellow Warrior will have to release you.
- Non-linear levels with loads of activities to do. You can rob a store for money and use it to buy healing items, buy spray paint from others and use it to spray over rival gang's tags for extra points, buy weapons, and so on. You can also just cause general mayhem and destroy stuff for extra points.
- You can mug people for money and also steal radios from cars. Getting caught will result in someone calling the police.
- A lot of the missions that aren't from the movie are a lot of fun and add to the world and story of the Warriors. For example, one involves a riot going on that three members take advantage of to get more loot. Or one where they start as an official gang and try to get on the protection payroll of businesses around Coney Island.
- Great environments that faithfully adhere to the grungy style of the movie.
- Great soundtrack.
- Loads of minigames, like doing pullups to build up your strength, and the aforementioned tagging of rival gangs tags.
- During the end credits, you play as the Riffs' leader and beat up the Rogues.
- A fun Final Fight style game is unlocked after the credits where Swan has to save Mercy.
Bad Qualities
- The final boss fight against Luther is a bit of a disappointment as far as the boss fights in this game go. While the first part is a typical, fun beat 'em up boss fight, he then takes out his gun and you have to throw bottles at him while he's not firing, and then fight plenty of fellow Rogues at the same time. If the second part had been taken out, it probably would've been alright.
- Like Red Dead Revolver, GTA: LCS, and GTA VCS, the game doesn't have a PC version.
