A good way to do a decent Tom and Jerry game even if it isn't the ultimate game that the title say.

Tom & Jerry: The Ultimate Game of Cat and Mouse!, also known as Tom & Jerry (and Tuffy) or simply as Tom and Jerry, is a video game developed by Software Creations.
The game was first released in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and ported to MS-DOS computers in 1993. Broadly based on the series, it has a unique plot centered around Tom, Jerry, and Tuffy.
Good Qualities
- Fluid controls, as they are tight and responsive, and because of this, it will not cause cheap deaths because of poor controls, even if most of the game had cheap deaths because of the enemies placements.
- Fun gameplay that mostly center on the platforming sections and it is very satistying to pull off the platforming sections, also killing the enemies is really satistying too.
- Decent boss fights that are mostly Tom himself and most of his fights are either unique or challenging without being too unfair for most of his fights.
- The fight where you must hit the bee so that they attack Tom is the best exemple of a unique boss fight, and that fight is also decently challenging.
- Also despite that some of the fights doesn't had Tom attacking you and stand still, at least they are also challenging but even then sometime it doesn't make any senses.
- For a Tom and Jerry game, the story is decent even if it's mostly Jerry that had to save Tuffy.
- There's a lot of unique levels to play, and their level design is very interesting since it is based on Jerry size.
- Amazing soundtrack that is probably the best one out of a Tom and Jerry game (along with War of the Whiskers), as they are extremely catchy and it sound impressive, even better it was composed by Tim Follin, which was howewer mostly know for doing the soundtrack of Plok!.
- The rendition of the Tom and Jerry theme is by far very impressive and way better than the one of the SNES game where it was terrible, here it sound very catchy and unforgettable, and also the best way to remix the theme song on the NES.
- While the game is way too difficult for a kid game (see BQ#1), the game is challenging and can be very pleasant for those who want to play an extremely difficult NES game.
- Good graphics for it's time, with the sprites being very detailled and colorful, and the backgrounds also look great, it also look much better than the SNES game.
- The ending where Jerry did save Tuffy, and after that the credits came and we see a picture of Jerry and Tuffy and even Tom.
- It is one of the only decent Tom and Jerry game released in the 90s because most T&J games in those era were either mediocre or downright terrible, howewer here it thankfully not the case.
Bad Qualities
- The main problem of this game is that while not a bad game by any mean, it is ruined by an extreme difficulty that is very unbalanced to the point of being on par with Battletoads on the same console and is even harder than the SNES game, which was hard but mostly because of poor controls.
- The enemies placements are the real reason of the extreme difficulty because they're always placed in horrible places that make it borderline impossible to dodge them and because of this, it had lot of cheap deaths.
- In the later levels it is even worse because there's way more enemies than usual and because of this, they are extremely frustrating.
- The enemies placements are the real reason of the extreme difficulty because they're always placed in horrible places that make it borderline impossible to dodge them and because of this, it had lot of cheap deaths.
- The game is rather short because you can beat it in only 30 minutes if you're good at the game.
- The DOS port is inferior for quite a number of reasons.
- First off, there's not any musics that play, which make the game almost silent with the exception of the sound effects themself.
- The framerate is quite poor in comparison to the NES original because it is very sluggish, and because of this the game is not as fluid and thus is not that great to play.
- The graphics, while reworked, feel more like a downgrade rather than a upgrade.
- And finally, the controls are more clunky and overall it's not the best experience for playing this game.
- Some of the bosses are still frustrating or not well thought, one exemple is where we need to avoid fires to throw your projectiles on Tom.
Reception
Tom and Jerry received mixed to positive reviews by gamers, without too much reviews by critics, it had a score of 3.26 on Gamefaqs based on 182 users.
