Toshinden 4 (Toshinden Subaru in Japan) is the fourth and final installment of the fighting game series Battle Arena Toshinden. Unlike previous installments, it only saw release in Japan and the PAL region. It was released on August 12, 1999 in Japan and then in Europe on June 30, 2000, and it was the first and only game in the series to not being released on North America due to the bankruptcy of it's formely publisher Screaming Pink.
Why It Sucks
- Ugly 3D graphics, even for the year it came out.
- It has only 13 playable characters (most of them are new), a far cry from its predecessor.
- Speaking of characters, most of them are not memorable due to their undeveloped background and their figthing style. Basically the Soulcalibur V of the series.
- Awful and slow gameplay.
- Pointless control scheme: The game tells you that you need to make the special moves by doing 2D fighting game common inputs (eg. 214+p, 623+p, etc.), yet you can do them by just pressing the special button and a directional button at the same time by default.
- There are only 3 battles to play in the story mode (4 if you don't lose a single one), which is pretty short for a fighting game.
- Lackluster difficulty, you can beat your opponents by just defending and counter them everytime. It doesn't help the fact that you can also beat them by throwing them out of the ring.
- Vermillion is a lame final boss, despite his attacks are pretty powerful and have a good range he makes the same mistakes than the rest of the characters and by thus, he can be beaten easily.
- Uninteresting story.
- The stages look dull and boring overall despite of being new.
- There are times where the camera angles are messy and you can't see what are you doing.
- It killed the Toshinden series for good.
Redeeming Qualities
- The illustrations are good.
- It has a nice anime opening.
- Good music overall.
- Cool box art.
- The characters from the previous game like Naru have new moves and combos.
