Totally Spies! is an animated action comedy television series created by Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel and mainly produced by French company Marathon Media and co-produced with Canadian company Image Entertainment Corporation for seasons 3 to 5.

Summary

WOOHP, a secret government organization, hires three students from Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California, as the titular spies to solve espionage cases around the world.

Why It Totally Rocks!

  1. The animation and art style are great, and it gets better and better after each season, and it uses anime-influence. Thanks to Koko Entreprises (seasons 1 & 2) Digital eMation and Seoul Movie.
  2. The concept of having teenage girls as spies is unique.
  3. It has an interesting and unique premise on the spy genre, taking influence from Clueless and the Charlie's Angels franchise, though one twist being is that unlike the latter, the main characters are all teenagers, making it feel unique, since it has been rarely done in a lot of spy shows.
  4. Many of the characters are likable:
    • The main protagonist Samantha is a great leader and is loyal, and always puts her first things first.
    • Clover despite being materialistic, is shown to understand the importance of friendship and teamwork.
    • Alexandra is depicted to be a wonderful pacifist, despite being immature or childish at times.
    • Jerry is very responsible and helpful towards the main protagonist Samantha, Clover, and Alexandra.
  5. The soundtrack is brilliant.
  6. The character designs are pretty and/or handsome.
  7. While the art style doesn't resemble anime, the Asian characters (such as Keiko) and Caucasian characters, have features to differentiate them from each other compared to most anime.
  8. The plots and lore of the show are creative and entertaining.
  9. The action scenes are really good and exciting.
  10. The movie served as a brilliant prequel to the show.
  11. Great voice acting.

Bad Qualities

  1. While more proficient and faithful than Code Lyoko and Winx Club, as mentioned above, the show doesn't completely resemble anime, as the characters look a bit more like Western comic characters.
  2. The characters can be stereotypical sometimes.
  3. While the voice acting is good, the use of valley girl accents, can be annoying also, depending on you're view Mandy's voice can be annoying.
    • In addition while meant to be unlikable in the first place, Mandy herself is unlikable in her own other ways than just being a downright jerk. However, she can arguably be funny too.
  4. Some of the episodes can be awful or mediocre, such as "The Elevator".
  5. The show may be obscure to some extent despite its unique qualities.
  6. Its spin-off sequel, The Amazing Spiez, is inferior.
  7. The show went downhill in season 7.

Trivia

  • Originally the series is going to be about a girl band and the show would promote a real life three-girl band. However the idea was scrapped, and the main three girls were later changed to spies, becoming what the show ended up being.
  • When production on the show moved from Los Angeles to Toronto after the first two seasons, Katie Leigh and Jess Harnell were replaced by Katie Griffin and Adrian Truss Jackson as the voices of Alex and Jerry. Leigh wanted to continue voicing Alex, but had to leave due to health issues. Jennifer Hale and Andrea Baker, however, continued their roles as Sam and and Clover in separate recordings in Hollywood.
