Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals is a fighting video game released in 1999, developed by Takara and published by BAM! Entertainment in North America and Takara in Japan. It's based on the Transformers series of the same name.

The original Japanese versions went by the name of Transformers: Beast Wars Metals 64 (N64) and Transformers Beast Wars Metals: Gekitotsu! Gangan Battle (PS), with the biggest difference between them being gameplay modes and selectable characters.

Why It Sucks

  1. Laughable cutscenes.
  2. This game on the Nintendo 64 version runs on the AeroGauge engine, which is not only a poor engine choice, but this could explain why the graphics appear to be similar to said game which is based on the engine that this one uses.
  3. The game is arguably a ripoff off Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64, which came out months before this.
  4. The story campaign of the PS version is missing in the N64 version, it instead has a normal arcade mode.
    • To contrast, the individual character endings is also missing in the PS version in favor of two faction specific ones.
  5. Really long loading times.
  6. You only get to choose 8 characters on both versions of the game (4 more are available with cheat codes).
    • Also, on the PlayStation version, it doesn't offer you to choose a character at all.
  7. Terrible enemy AI.
  8. Boring and bland gameplay. Especially in the N64 version where the characters movements are restricted in the English release (they can no longer go very far from one another) for some strange reason.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The concept of a transformers based fighting game is an intriguing idea, even if it weren't executed very well.
  2. The music, while repetitive, is decent.

Reception

Both versions of this game received poor reviews, with IGN gave a 3/10, Game Fan gave it a 55 out of 100, and Nintendo Power gave the Nintendo 64 version a 6.1/10.
