Transformers: Devastation is an action hack and slash game based on the Transformers franchise. The game was developed by PlatinumGames and published by Activision. It was released in October 2015 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Over two years after its release, the game was delisted from sale through digital storefronts on December 21, 2017, including other Transformers games published by Activision. A few days later, it was removed from the Humble Store.

Plot

When the Decepticons attack a human city, the Autobots arrive to stop them, learning of not only the existence of a crashed Autobot ship called the Proudstar, but also of the Decepticons' nefarious plan to use the Insecticons to cyber form the Earth into a new Cybertron.

Why It Rocks

  1. Five playable Autobots, each with distinct characteristics.
  2. Fast, stylish, and entertaining combat.
  3. Gorgeous cel-shaded graphics reminiscent of the original 1980's television series (though the game is based on the Generations lineup, specifically the Combiner Wars subline of the Prime Wars Trilogy toyline).
  4. Excellent, a high-energy soundtrack that Vince Dicola helped compose.
  5. Most of the game's characters are voiced by their original actors from the show (though Starscream is voiced by a different actor, Scott Whyte, as his original actor, Chris Latta, had passed away and also Shockwave, who is played by Daniel Kurylo instead of Corey Burton).
  6. Plot and cutscenes feel as though they're from an episode of the show.
  7. Fan favorite Decepticons such as Starscream and Soundwave make a return.
  8. Large amount of weapons you can customize the Autobots with.
  9. On top of this, you can upgrade your Autobot's attributes.
  10. Various fun combos to pull off.

Devastating Qualities

  1. Short campaign, taking only six hours to beat.
  2. Awkward camera angles.
  3. Gets repetitive in certain sections.
  4. Despite being developed by a Japanese company, it was not released in Japan.

Reception

Transformers: Devastation received "generally favorable" reviews, according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. Critics praised nostalgia, graphics, and gameplay, while criticisms were directed towards the repetition, frustrating camera controls, and the game's short length.

Giving a score of 6.5 out of 10, Justin McElroy of Polygon called PlatinumGames "one of the industry’s best action developers" and called the game "Platinum’s love letter to old school Transformers". He said the game's "numerous shortcomings will likely warn away all but the most diehard G1 fans", who are nonetheless "in for a treat". He found frustration in the camera manipulation, the melee button-mashing, and the boss battles, concluding that the player's "only meaningful interaction with the world of Transformers Devastation is beating the living hell out of a whole lot of robots in disguise."

Destructoid awarded the game a score of 8.5 out of 10 and called it "charming", saying that it is "[n]ot perfect, but it's easy to ignore the rough spots when faced with so many engaging design decisions and entertaining moments. A memorable game that's hard not to like and recommend to others."
