Transformers: Prime was an American CGI-animated science fiction drama series that aired during November 26, 2010 - July 26, 2013 (Which was exactly 26 months straight) on Discovery Family along with its sequel, Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015). This show takes place in the Aligned Continuity Family of Transformers and is the first show of said continuity.
Both It and its sequel, Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015) also aired on Discovery Family (Formerly the Hub Network), the latter aired on Cartoon Network, but no longer does due to unwanted shows popping up everywhere on that Network.
Surprisingly enough for a Transformers show, it won multiple Daytime Emmy Awards.
Why All Autobots Should Roll Out
- For a Transformers show, it has a lot of memorable characters they focused on, and likable ones at that.
- It is more faithful to the original Transformers TV show than the Michael Bay Pentalogy.
- Its story had very interesting twists and turns.
- Nice animation by Japanese studio Polygon Pictures which streamlines the clunky Bay designs into something far better to look at.
- Actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker reprise their roles as Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively.
- The designs of the robots are really good.
- A lot of likable characters such as Knockout, Bumblebee, Arcee, Bulkhead, etc.
- Even the human characters have a lot of backstory behind them and are memorable.
- Nicely struck balance between happy, serious, and even funny moments.
- The small amount of main characters allowed for more character development and characterization.
- Unlike the other versions which usually show that Cybertron had a war, they expanded the story. It showed that the Decepticons were once former slaves, and the caste system started this war. Megatron's ideals were noble at first, but he began having a thirst for revenge, showing that Megatron wasn't always the "Bad guy".
- The humor was not overdone and is actually in fairly good taste regarding the tone of the show.
- The show's main theme is a very nice rearrangement of Steve Jablonsky's "Arrival on Earth" by Brian Tyler.
- It does reintroduce Unicron (voiced by Lord Of The Rings actor, John Noble), from Transformers: The Movie.
- "I needed that!"
Bad Qualities
- The death scenes are too violent and even have blood on them, which is rather gruesome for a kids' show.
- The third season, Beast Hunters only had 13 episodes instead of the previous season's 26, which meant Starscream's redemption, the creation of the Predacons and the development of Ultra Magnus and Smokescreen had to be rushed and capped off in the movie Predacons Rising.
- Speaking of Predacons Rising, Optimus Prime dies YET AGAIN, which means the writers still couldn't stray from some cliché decisions unlike Animated or even the Unicron Trilogy (Although it is bittersweet).
- Unlikeable characters like Jack's rival Vince and his mother June Darby.
- Bumblebee's weird buzzing voice can be annoying at times.
Trivia
- The line "This is why I hate talking to machines" is a callback to Animated, the show that preceded Prime.
- The line "I needed that", usually spoken by Ratchet, became a popular meme among the Transformers fandom.
