Ultraman is an 2004 action video game that was developed by Bitsteps and was published by Bandai on May 20, 2004 in Japan. This game follows the story of the original Ultraman and Return of Ultraman.

Why it Rocks

  1. The story is really faithful for the series counterparts with all favourite kaiju/aliens that can be found here.
  2. Once again, there's a plenty modes and yes, a lot of content:
    • Story Mode where you play as Hayata aka Ultraman to fight against Kaiju/Alien through the final confrontation with Zetton.
    • Return of Ultraman mode where you play as Jack to fight against only fewer kaiju through final confrontation with Alien Nackle and Black King.
    • Monster Mode where you play as Kaiju to fight against Ultraman and other kaiju.
    • Battle Mode was Multiplayer mode only restricted to 2 player and no CPU.
  3. Great Graphics even for 2004 standards, although they have poorly aged.
    • Both Ultraman and Kaiju/Alien has great detailed models.
  4. The soundtrack is also great, and those musics are from the original shows.
  5. The controls are very simple and very tight, it's still easy to understand for kids.
    • The finishing moves is also very simple. While you're doing beating the monster, the energy's raise up. When energy is enough, prepare the finishing moves to the monster by pressing the Triangle button.
  6. The VA's is good and when Ultraman getting red, the narrator telling to the player to finish the battle as possible. This is a good way to hints the player when Ultraman getting struggle.
  7. The gameplay is quite fun, and is an improvement over the SNES Ultraman game.

Bad Qualities

  1. Some of missed opportunities:
    1. You can't battle against Dada and Mefilas, despite the story is really faithful for the series counterparts.
    2. Return of Ultraman mode was only 5 Kaiju/Aliens.
    3. There's no Player vs CPU in Battle mode.
  2. The Camera of this game can be annoying sometimes, especially in on-foot section.
  3. Just like all of Ultraman games, No English translation (Unless the Start screen which had English translation).
  4. The story mode is pretty short, it's last only 50 minutes to 1 hour or 1 hour 15 minutes if you play Return of Ultraman mode.

Reception

The games received positive reception by Critics and Gamers alike.

Tips

There are several tips for this games:

  1. Neronga is easy to fight, you need reflexes for cut the electric horn at the right time.
  2. When you fight against Red King, you're must don't uses Specium Ray, instead uses Ultra Slash to cut 3 out of Red King bodies.
  3. Antlar is one of difficult method to mutilate. You must don't move until the time perfect, and press the circle buttons to perform the attack until the Antler horns got cut in half.
  4. Baltan was really good fight. If you not uses Specium Ray, you can perform the Ultra Slash and will be cut in half, just like Red King does.
  5. Gomora is best of all bunch for Ultraman fighting games. To performs the mutilation, you must press the circle buttons at the right time to cutting the horn in half. Then, you're performed the throws abilities to mutilate the Gomora's tails.
  6. Zetton, just like Antlar is considered the difficult fight ever. You're not performed the Specium Ray, just like original. All we had to do is uses the Ultra Slash at the right time and you get the best ending (well, more like the laziness best ending).
