"Uncle Jokes" is the 47th episode of the 1st season of Teen Titans Go!.
Synopsis
Starfire joins Beast Boy and Cyborg's comedy trope and learns their ways, as long as she avoids the dreaded “uncle jokes” (bad jokes) that Robin takes pride in.
Why It's an Unfunny Joke
- This episode is very annoying and unintentionally preaches the usage of character archetypes/stereotypes which is bad because heavily relying on such makes the character one-dimensional. Details will be explained below.
- The beginning is unnecessary and can be cut because it feels as if it is there to pad out the runtime. The beginning goes like this: Cyborg and Beast Boy repeat the phrase “I bet I can make you smile.” then they dance to dubstep music as Beast Boy transforms into animals such as a cat and a pig. It adds nothing to the episode.
- Meanwhile, Starfire feels excluded and wants to join Cyborg and Beast Boy's friendship, but they say "no" because she does "not fit in [their] circle" and is unfunny, which is cruel.
- There’s also an unfunny gag where Cyborg and Beast Boy call out Robin for telling “uncle jokes” which are unfunny jokes, it’s not funny very annoying. The cutaway gag of Robin’s “uncle jokes” does not do it any service too.
- Speaking of which, the “Uncle Jokes Rap” is super annoying and repetitive.
- Robin becomes upset when Starfire becomes friends with Cyborg and Beast because it upsets the so-called team balance that consists of stereotypes “the comic relief”, “the love interest”, “the lone wolf leader”, and “the sassy girl”.
- Afterwards, Robin goes insane and “mutates” to look like the other Titans, it’s disgusting and it feels as if the writers are trying mimic the erratic facial expressions Ren and Stimpy is famously known for but fails miserably.
- Bad ending: Starfire gets rejected by Cyborg and Beast Boy, Robin is cured of his insanity and Starfire seeks comfort rather creepily from Robin, thus embodying the “status quo is god” trope.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- At least Starfire was able to be included like she wanted to.
