Knights Contract is a hack-n-slash game developed by Game Republic and published by Bandai Namco, released in February 22, 2011 in the US and July 7, 2011 in Japan.
It was the final game made by GameRepublic as they shut down in June 2011 before the game could get released in Japan.
Bad Qualities
- Like Clash of the Titans: The Video Game, this game has an emphasis on quicktime events that require very fast reaction times, and if you fail those, you not only take damage but also have to do it again afterward to defeat certain bosses.
- The main factor that drives this game's difficulty is that the main protagonist, Heinrich, is invincible, but his accompanying escort, Gretchen, is not. This is made worse where in certain levels, Gretchen will take damage over time if she's too far from Heinrich, to the point where sometimes you have to carry her across the level on non-combat sections. In fact, some levels could have her be knocked off the map and die instantly, as this is one of those games where pitfalls instantly kill you.
- Sequel baiting: The game's ending shows Heinrich and Gretchen, now lived to the modern day where they see some force approaching from space, therefore plotting the events of the sequel. However, because the game ended up causing the dev to shut down afterward, said cliffhanger would never be happened. Coincidentally, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, a hack-n-slash game similar to this, also did a modern setting.
Good Qualities
- The execution attacks, including the one where Gretchen crushes the target transformed in a giantess spirit form, are pretty epic to watch.
- The idea of a "couple-style" protagonist duo in a video game is a decent idea on paper, which this game does execute half of that concept right.
- Decent soundtrack, which goes for a dark fantasy approach which suits the game's tone.
- The graphics are pretty good for 2011 PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 standards, including the cutscenes.
