Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles is a 1994 action platformer developed by Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive. The game follows Sonic and Tails as they crash on Angel Island and encounter Dr. Eggman trying to relaunch his Death Egg space station. Along the way, they meet the strong but naive Knuckles, who has been tricked by the doctor into helping him.
Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sega began work a the followup. Initially planned to be on a 32 megabit cartridge, a shortened development cycle due to a licensing deal with McDonalds forced Sega to release the first half of the game in February as Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The latter half, titled Sonic & Knuckles, was released in October with a unique "lock-on" cartridge, allowing the full game to be played as one.
A follow up was expected on the Sega Saturn, however as the Saturn sold mediocrely outside of Japan, the game was officially followed up by Sonic Adventure in 1998.
