Minions: The Rise of Gru (By Release)

Despicable Me 4 is a 2024 American animated comedy film produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the sequel to Despicable Me 3 (2017), the fourth main installment, and the sixth overall installment in the Despicable Me franchise. The film was directed by Chris Renaud, co-directed by Patrick Delage (in his feature directorial debut), produced by Chris Meledandri and Brett Hoffman, and written by Mike White and Ken Daurio. It stars the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Sofía Vergara, Stephen Colbert, Renaud, Madison Polan, Dana Gaier, Chloe Fineman, and Will Ferrell. The film sees reformed supervillain and secret agent Gru (Carell) relocate his family to a safe house when his old rival Maxime Le Mal (Ferrell) seeks revenge. Subplots deal with Gru's family adjusting to their new lives, teenage neighbor Poppy Prescott (King) trying to follow in Gru's villainous footsteps, and a group of Gru's Minions (Coffin) becoming superheroes.

Qualities That Are Still Not Despicable

  1. Incredible animation, as expected from this film's predecessors. Similar to media and movies such as the Super Mario Odyssey (which ironically, in 2023, Nintendo and Illumination released a Mario film named The Super Mario Bros. Movie on April 5, 2023), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sonic the Hedgehog film series, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Smurfs the Lost Village, Wish Dragon, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Sing 2 (ironically and coincidentally, both Sing 2, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Migration, and Despicable Me 4 are all Universal Pictures and Illumination movies), The Bad Guys, Lightyear, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Migration (ironically and coincidentally enough, both Sing 2, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Migration, and Despicable Me 4 all are Universal Pictures and Illumination Movies), and Wish, Despicable Me 4 is shockingly comparable to that of a live-action movie. You can tell that Illumination inspired the animation of Despicable Me 4 by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, especially with the fact that Despicable Me 4 came out a year and a half after The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
    • Ironically enough, Khary Payton, who voiced the Penguin King, was in Despicable Me 4. John DiMaggio was also in that movie.
  2. "Double Life" by Pharell Williams is a great theme song for the movie
  3. Poppy Prescott is a interesting new addition, being lovable and having cool motives.
  4. This movie is a Megamind and Despicable Me movie that will be closest to a crossover.

Despicable Qualities

  1. Maxime Le Mal is an inferior villain, especially compared to the previous mainline villains such as Vector, El Macho, and Balthazar Bratt.
  2. One of the problems of this movie is that there are two many subpilots.
  3. In fact, Margo, Edith, Agnes, and Lucy Wilde get sidelined in favor of Gru, Gru Jr., Maxime Le Mal, Silas Ramsbottom, and the Minions.
    • Despite Despicable Me 4 taking place after Despicable Me 3, Dru barely appears.
  4. Gru Jr.'s addition raised some eyebrows for some people, especially since Gru and Lucy had a baby but Margo, Lucy, and Agnes don't age.
