Seahorse Seashell Party is the second episode of the tenth season of Family Guy and the 167th episode altogether. It originally aired on Fox on October 2, 2011, and was written by Wellesly Wild and directed by Brian Iles.
Plot
Part of FOX's Night of the Hurricane with a hurricane affecting all three Seth MacFarlane shows.
Why This Episode Is Not a Party
- Misleading title: Despite the title, the episode has nothing to do with seahorses or seashells, and no parties are had in this episode.
- For starters, this is an acid drug trip episode, since most of it contains the infamous scenes where Brian goes on drugs.
- The entire scene where Brian goes on drugs and has a nightmare is a pathetic attempt at shock value as it just feels like the writers drawing every random thing they could.
- It begins with Brian waking up in a creepy place and witnessing Peter outright burning to death.
- It ends with a jumpscare of Stewie with a live-action mouth and it’s very terrifying.
- Peter, Chris, and Lois are all incredibly unlikable, as they are complete jerks to Meg since they exclude her from fingerbanging and also starts projecting the blame on each other like how they used to do it to Meg when she criticized them. And to make matters worse, they never apologize to her for all the times they mistreated her at all.
- Brian is not any better, as he says that the only reason Meg seems strong is because she seems to be a lightning rod for getting abused.
- He also acts like an idiot in this episode, by taking psychedelic mushrooms.
- Speaking of WTEINAP #4, the episode contains a very bad moral that abuse victims should stay in abusive relationships for their abuser's benefit. Which is disgusting and hypocritical of them since by the next episode, they say you are not a woman for taking abuse from your peers, which is the same episode that also focuses on subjects like abuse.
- Bad ending: Meg apologizes to her family for standing up for herself and continues to take crap from them.
- There are also some filler scenes such as Peter making dad noises and humming the theme song of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Redeeming Qualities
- Meg and Stewie are the only likable characters, as Meg stands up for herself after all the times she got abused. Not to mention this is when she has her original personality in Seasons 8-14.
- Stewie helping out Brian is pretty wholesome.
- Even though she took it all back, Meg chewing out her family is extremely satisfying, especially when Lois starts crying.
- Not only that, but it also spawned a meme called, "You guys all think your so much better than me".
- Some jokes are funny, albeit offensive. Such as the "Flock of Jews" joke.
- Despite the main moral being bad, the moral Stewie gives about trying out drugs is at least not meant to be taken seriously.
- In spite of being shock value, Brain's nightmare sequence is admittedly well-animated, even if overly gross.
Reception
While "Seahorse Seashell Party" is rated 6.6/10 on IMDB, it has received mostly negative reviews. Critics considered it the worst episode of the show alongside "Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q", and "Brian's a Bad Father", while also being the most infamous. The scene where Meg goes out on her family is seen to be satisfying by most fans, while the drugs scenes with Brian is said to be some of the most disturbing. And the episode was also featured sixth on PhantomStrider's 2015 worst Family Guy episode list. There was also the aforementioned "You guys all think you're so much better than me" moment that spawned itself as a meme.
Trivia
- This episode involves a crossover plot of a hurricane affecting all three current Seth MacFarlane shows including American Dad! in "Hurricane!" and The Cleveland Show in "The Hurricane". It is a parody of a stunt used by NBC on November 9, 1991 alternately called Night of the Hurricane and Hurricane Saturday involving a hurricane simultaneously affecting the sitcoms The Golden Girls, Empty Nest, and Nurses. Although no characters from either The Cleveland Show or American Dad! appear in this episode, Cleveland and Peter do appear in "Hurricane!"
