Bee Movie is an 2007 American computer-animated comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation in association with Columbus 81 Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film was directed by Simon J. Smitch and Steve Hickner, produced by Jerry Seinfeld and Christina Stenberg and written by Seinfeld, Spike Feresten, Barry Marder and Andy Robin.

Plot

Fresh out of college, Barry the Bee finds the prospect of working with honey uninspiring. He flies outside the hive for the first time and talks to a human, breaking a cardinal rule of his species. Barry learns that humans have been stealing and eating honey for centuries, and he realizes that his true calling is to obtain justice for his kind by suing humanity for theft.

Bad Qualities

  1. However, the film suffered from flanderizing itself and it had pointless dialogue, a unoriginal premise and unfunny moments similar to other animated movies released during this time.
  2. The film is also an attempt to discontinue all sorts of honey available in real life, despite the plot explaining how Barry wants to sue humanity for stealing it.
  3. Most of the characters aside from Barry and Vanessa, are very unlikable:
    • Ken, is a very bad example of a villain. He always tries to torture Barry, even when one of his friends tries to eat him (with a tortilla chip dipped with guacamole) and Ken says BEE!.
  4. The infamous opening disclaimer...which sets up almost everything in the movie is also very, very pointless.

Good Qualities

  1. Barry is a decent protagonist. When he encounters the human world and meets Vanessa, he discovers that the honey was used as products and tries to fight back.
  2. There are also decent/good moments in the film such as:
    • The You like jazz scene.
    • The Sugar, sugar scene which was turned out to be a dream Barry had about Vanessa during his time back in the hive.
    • The court scene and its aftermath, when almost everything honey-related is gone from the city.
    • Also, expys of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet are seen during the montage getting shot by humans in a tree they were at.
  3. The final act is very fun to watch.
  4. The entire script, as well as its opening disclaimer and the movie as a whole has became a recent meme years after its release
  5. Despite its flaws, the film has gained the status of a cult-classic even when it got attention in meme culture.
