Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is a 2022 computed-animated martial arts comedy film. The film was produced by Rob Minkoff alongside Adam and Peter Nagle, Guy Collins, Yair Landau and Susan Purcell from a story by Andrew Bergman and a screenplay by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper and was directed by Minkoff, Mark Koeitser and Chris Bailey. A co-production between Align, Aniventure and Flying Tigers Entertainment in association with HB Wink Animation, Cinesite and GFM Animation. The film was intially announced in 2015 as Blazing Samurai, however, it was later shelved due to Arc Productions (which was set to provide the animation services) shuttering, causing the film to be rescued in 2019 and redone from scratch. The film was ultimately completed in 2021 but due to unknown reasons, the film was released a year later on July 15 by Paramount Pictures in the US to mixed reviews.

Plot

A down-on-his-luck hound finds himself in a town full of cats who need a hero to defend them from a ruthless villain's evil plot to wipe their village off the map. With help from a reluctant trainer, the underdog must assume the role of fearsome samurai and team up with the felines to save the day. The only problem is -- they all hate dogs.

Bad Qualities

  1. The film is a major downgrade from Blazing Saddles (which the film took inspiration from) and is a way much worse example than The Thief and the Cobbler. The film's production took a big huge dip when Arc Productions was shuttered and the film didn't have any insufficient money to fund which caused many of the film's crew to leave the project. The final result was also one of the very mixed things to happen in animation history.
  2. Hank is a very unlikable protagonist and similar to Tack in the Miramax version of Thief he is the reason why his personality had to be redone from scratch. While also getting character development in the final cut, he is very unfavorable to the cats.
  3. Ika Chu, while still an unlikable villain, is too much reliable on Hank almost of the time
  4. When Yuki tells her cat citizens when Hank encounters her, she says it was time to use their hand sanitizers by literally licking their paws, which is gross to do so in real life.

Good Qualities

  1. Sumo, while an ok villain, has a close bond with Hank and the rest of the citizens later on in the film.
  2. The action scenes in the film are also very fun to watch.
  3. Good voice acting, especially from Michael Cera, Ricky Gervais, Mel Brooks and even Samuel L. Jackson
  4. The animation, thanks to Cinesite, is absolutely beautiful.

Trivia

  • The film was supposed to have Mel B (of Spice Girls fame) in the cast but was later scrapped for unknown reasons.
