Ponyo (崖の上のポニョ, Ponyo on the cliff) is a Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Animated by Studio Ghibli for Nippon Television, Dentsu, Hakuhodo DY Media Partners, Buena Vista Home Entertainment Japan, Mitsubishi and distributed by Toho. The film stars the voices of Yuria Nara, Hiroki Doi, Tomoko Yamaguchi, Kazushige Nagashima, Yūki Amami, George Tokoro, Rumi Hiiragi, Akiko Yano, Kazuko Yoshiyuki and Tomoko Naraoka and was released in Japan on July 19, 2008 to positive reviews.
Plot
During a forbidden excursion to see the surface world, a goldfish princess encounters a human boy named Sosuke, who gives her the name Ponyo. Ponyo longs to become human, and as her friendship with Sosuke grows, she becomes more humanlike. Ponyo's father brings her back to their ocean kingdom, but so strong is Ponyo's wish to live on the surface that she breaks free, and in the process, spills a collection of magical elixirs that endanger Sosuke's village.
Why Anything is Possible
- The film is far any superior to any Ghibli film, the animation, the music even the characters.
- Sōsuke is an incredible protagonist, his friendship with Ponyo is much superior in the film.
- Lisa, while also a good mom to Sōsuke gets an incredible performance from Tina Fey in the English dub.
- The ending shot when Sōsuke kisses Ponyo, turning her back into a human.
- "Ponyo loves Sōsuke"
Bad Qualities
- Ponyo usually does gross things in the film such as moving her toes like hands, licking some blood on Sosuke's finger, and spraying an elderly woman in the face.
