Shrek the Third is a 2007 American computer-animated comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The third film in the Shrek franchise (which was loosely based on the book of the same name by William Steig), the film was directed by Chris Miller, co-directed by Raman Hui from a story by Andrew Adamson and a screenplay by Jeffrey Price, Peter S. Seaman, Miller and Aron Warner. The film was released on May 18, 2007 to mixed reviews.

Plot

When King Harold suddenly croaks, Shrek (Mike Myers) learns he will have to rule the land of Far, Far Away, unless he can find a suitable heir to the throne. The most-promising candidate is Princess Fiona's (Cameron Diaz) cousin Artie (Justin Timberlake), a teenage slacker in a medieval high-school. Shrek and his trusted companions, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas), set out to bring Artie back but find their mission is a bigger challenge than they expected.

Why It's Not an All-Star (Bad Qualities)

  1. The huge problem this movie had was that, it was a major downgrade from its predecessor...there any multiple reasons why such as:
    • Prince Charming, while he played a major part in Shrek 2, he was badly rewritten into the villain (alongside Merlin) in this film. Unlike his mother in the second film, which was defeated after one of her spells hits her. He and Merlin got major screentime in The Third such as the scene when Merlin and his assistants try to capture many of Shrek's friends (even Gingy).
    • While the film is mostly centered on Shrek trying to rule Far, Far, Away (unless he can find a suitable heir to the throne)...he wears the crown for a minority of the film before the big second act of the film, when Artie gets major screentime.
    • The opening montage is likely nonsense, such as Shrek almost throwing a torch on a ship, which is considered harmful in real life.
  2. The ogre babies, while attempting to cash-in on the Dronkeys from the previous film, are very unlikable. Even one of them vomits Shrek from his stroller, which is considered gross to do in public in real life.

Good Qualities

  1. There are a lot of good/funny moments in the film such as:
    • King Harold's death (plus his final words) and funeral, which was saddening for the character and the frogs also sang Live and Let Die in the funeral part while he gets carried away in the castle's pond.
    • The infamous DA-DA scene.
    • The montage when Puss and Donkey try to free many of their pals to stop Prince Charming and Merlin.
    • The scene when Fiona teams up with her friends (which are expys of fairytale characters) to stop Charming and his assistants is also fun and entertaining.
    • The final act of the film, when Charming finally meets his demise by getting knocked by a cardboard tower only to have his crown hit before Shrek and co. give it to Artie.
  2. Decent cameo from Seth Rogen, which is almost unrecognizable.
  3. Some people might find this movie to be good, despite it's flaws.
  4. The video game tie-in is good.

Trivia

  • At least, the film reunited John Cleese and Eric Idle which both actors are of Monty Phyton fame.
  • This is the only Shrek film to be released on HD DVD as Paramount was a avid supporter of the format, which was heavily criticized for ruining the DVD brand's reputation as a whole (even Toshiba themselves) and how Blu-ray's success caused the format to become obsolete.
