Turma da Mônica (Monica and Friends) is a Brazilian animated television series produced by Mauricio de Sousa Produções, based on the comic book series of the same name. The series first debuted in 1980 with the release of the Super 8 shorts and its still ongoing to this day. The series has been shown on television since the Globo shorts in 1999 and on the Brazilian version of Cartoon Network since 2004.
Good Qualities
- The series is a faithful adaptation of the comic stories, with several changed elements.
- Good characters such as Monica, Jimmy Five, Maggy, Smudge, Franklin, Blu among thousands of others.
- There are a handful of good episodes such as:
- Monica and Friends' Christmas (the pilot short, which began the show on a high note)
- Searching for Isabelle's Nose (which started the CineGibi episodes on a high note)
- Monica, the Famous
- Adventure in Time: Part 2/The Time Machine...again
- Must Bring Doll/Come to my Party
- Monica and Friends against Captain Fray (which ended the 2009 series on a high note)
- Pretty Christmas Night (which started the Globo-aired specials on a high note)
- Get That For Me?
- Lost in the Bedroom
- The Luca Plan (which ended the 2012-2015 series on a high note)
- Infallible Plans
Bad Qualities
- The infamous "Quadro a Quadro" episodes produced for Estrela Video are heavily panned by fans for having bizarre animation among others.
- The redubbing of the episodes (was mainly done to avoid copyright issues with the original audio) from the 1980s films were criticized by fans for having music replaced and dialogue rerecorded among many, many others.
- A handful of bad/average episodes such as:
- I Want to Get In! (which started the "O Bicho Papão" episodes on a sour note)
- Live Game (which ended the "Quadro a Quadro" series on an okay note)
