Tropes That I Hate

These are tropes I just can’t stand!

  1. Gross Close-Up- It should’ve stayed and died in the 90s! In Ren and Stimpy, John K mastered it but when everyone else tried to imitate him, they make us want vomit and bleach our eyes then set them on fire.
  2. Photoshop Animation- One Word: Lazy. Seriously, it was funny in SpongeBob and some of the Adult Swim shows, AND SHOULD’VE STAYED THERE. But when everyone else does it? Seriously, does it kill you to draw what your stock image is of?! I will only forgive you if you are making webtoons. (heck, every artist has their weaknesses, I can’t draw cars well. So, if your YouTube or Tik Tok animation has a stock image, I will praise you for trying! I am an animation student myself, and you’re a one-man band, nobody expects you to do be Disney. At least you tried!) But if you’re big corporation like Nickelodeon or Disney, then, I call you lazy because if you can’t draw X, go to the next guy or HIRE ANOTHER GUY IF NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO DRAW THE THING!
  3. Status Quo Is God- This trope, to me, does more harm than good. I just want it dead! Not a slow, painful death, a grueling, fast death! It’s when a change happens in an episode then the reset button is pushed at the end. It’s forced and a petty excuse not to have character development or story progression.
  4. Toilet Humor/References On TV-Y Shows- It is a trope at this point because it’s in various preschool shows such as Blue’s Clues, Rolie Polie Ollie, PB & J Otters, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends, HigglyTown Heroes, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Little Bill, Peg + Cat, Caillou, Martha Speaks, Bluey (though it can be excused), and Sesame Street (it can be excused too). It’s when preschool shows show characters explicitly using the bathroom (sitting on the toilet and in Bluey’s case, anywhere but, yep, it’s a running gag where Bingo pees in bushes for an unrealistic amount of time on the show. Seriously, does she have a bladder the size of a distillery silo? (Those canisters beer brews in at beer breweries) Characters peeing for a quarter of an episode IS NOT FUNNY), saying that they have to go to the bathroom, and baby characters getting their diapers changed onscreen. Yep, to me, it’s equivalent to a character swearing/saying “not nice” words (no censors, and characters uttering the words “sucks”, “crap”, and “what the hell?”), and showing uncensored bodily fluids on a TV-Y7 show. It’s not appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers to see and I blame those shows for the increase in toilet humor in our animation today. When talked about this on Reddit, I caused a riot. (But then Reddit is full of prissy entitled brats who get offended AT EVERYTHING. It’s like it’s populated by oversensitive babies! So, I left one month after making an account) When I asked my parents what they think, they said that they think it’s okay. Really?! Seriously, I think nothing about the bathroom should be in preschool shows. Wait ‘til they’re older! If you want something “taboo” in a TV-Y show, SHOW NURSING!! It’s not in any western animation and it should be shown more! It’s beautiful, healthy, and normal (I think motherhood is beautiful) but doesn’t get much love! And I think everyone should see it! (Why Seth McFarlene?) But regardless, this trope should die! Save toilet references for TV-Y7 and up, I don’t care what you say! It’s not appropriate and I think it’s to blame for the increase of toilet humor in our animation.
  5. “The X” For Every Title- The Amazing World of Gumball started this trope and I hate it! It’s so uncreative!, Wander Over Yonder also uses this trope.
  6. Naming Your Character After Their Species- Like, a baby named Baby, a dog named Dog, a cat named Cat, etc. You get the point. It’s very lazy and uncreative! Give your character a name or leave them in the writers’ room until you can think of one!
  7. Butt-Monkey- It’s not funny seeing a character who did nothing wrong get tormented every time just because.
  8. Getting away with horrific stuff- That’s a trope because Family Guy and Teen Titans Go! do it! Are they the FCC’s favorite or something?
  9. Broken Voice Boxes Getting Demon Voices- This trope scares me, whenever a toy or anything that plays sound on media gets broken, it sounds like Satan entered the thing. Why does this trope have to exist? Why can’t it just sound like broken toys in real life? They just sound quiet or garbled? Not like Satan possessed it. It has always scared me!
  10. Rebooting Everything Instead of Coming Up with Something New- Adding it because Hollywood has this problem! Stop making soulless reboots are trash! I totally get remaking a terrible show or movie to make it better or rebooting an obscure property nobody has heard of or putting a new twist on an old trope but rebooting properties! Stop! Make something new or remake a property that’s very obscure! I am just tired of them!! Looking at you, Disney.
