Category maintenance

Alright everyone. I'm currently writing this post to discuss one of the changes I've had in mind for the past couple of weeks now. In my previous post, I stated that I was trying to monitor and be active to the best of my abilities. I'm still trying to do that, however I'm currently planning to make some adjustments on one of the key aspects of the wiki service: the categories.

You've probably noticed that for the past couple of days, I've been hard at work doing a lot of cleanup in the category department. And that's because I've been trying to set up a bunch of disambiguation pages for various types of genres for films and TV shows. (I'll get to books and video games, if I have the time and energy afterwards)

Here's what I had in mind. Obviously I'll be covering all the broad genres such as the following...

Genre

  • Action
  • Adventure
  • Biography
  • Comedy
  • Crime
  • Drama
  • Family
  • Fantasy
  • Game Show
  • History
  • Holiday
  • Horror
  • Lifestyle
  • Music
  • Musical
  • Mystery
  • Reality TV
  • Romance
  • Sci-Fi
  • Sport
  • Talk Show
  • Thriller
  • War
  • Western

Form

  • Animation
  • Documentary
  • Short

Style

  • Anime

...but that's just the surface. I've been thinking that the wiki would likely expand from here, so I realized that maybe we'd need to dig a little deeper with some of the genres. Which was why I was planning on adding a bunch of subgenres to those categories. You likely noticed that I've already made some changes and started creating a bunch of categories. This was the intention behind it. Basically I'd create a disambiguation category "(Genre) media", that contains links to "(Genre) films" and "(Genre) shows", plus a bunch of subgenres that fall within the big genre, and the subgenres would have "(Subgenre) films and "(Subgenre) shows". Then I'd organize all of the categories by genre, form, style, technique and subgenre. I've got big plans for all this. And as a bonus each of the categories will feature a poster for a film or show that strongly represents said category. Check some the categories I've done so far to get an idea. I've already done the Action category which contains the following subgenres:

  • Action Epic
  • B-Action
  • Car Action
  • Disaster
  • Martial Arts
  • One-Person Army Action
  • Samurai
  • Superhero
  • Sword & Sandal
  • War
  • War Epic

I've also done the Adventure category which contains the following subgenres:

  • Adventure Epic
  • Desert Adventure
  • Dinosaur Adventure
  • Globetrotting Adventure
  • Jungle Adventure
  • Mountain Adventure
  • Quest
  • Road Trip
  • Sea Adventure
  • Swashbuckler
  • Teen Adventure
  • Urban Adventure

...I'm currently trying to do the Animation category, but I've ran into a couple of issues along the way. It's come to my attention that some of the categories are essentially copies/clones of pre-existing categories that essentially cover the same thing. For instance I had noticed some film pages used "Animated films" and "Animated movies", and some show pages that used "Animated shows" and "Animated series", and lot of pages that had an "Animation" category and/or a "Cartoons" category. It's very inconsistent and very confusing. I had deleted some of the clones and transferred those pages to the originals. I also removed a lot of episode pages and company/studio pages due to them not actually being films or shows (though they do produces films and shows, but we should save them for a separate category.) And as for the "Animation" category, I've moved everything out of there, and most of it's in "Animated films" or "Animated shows". Unfortunately, there's still the ["Cartoons" category (it's an unnecessary redirect, but it's still full of pages)], which will also need to have everything taken out of it under the following conditions:

  • Films and shows should be placed in "Animated films" or "Animated shows".
  • Episodes should be moved to "Animated episodes".
  • Animation companies and studios should be moved to "Animation studios".

Speaking of which, from this point on, if you're going to add a film or show to a genre, it should go under "(Genre) films" or "(Genre) shows", the main genre pages are meant to serve as a directory for subgenres, and other categories. They shouldn't have any mainstream pages in them. There's going to be some major cleanup over the next couple of weeks, but trust me, it'll all be worth it. Also if you come across any films/shows that you believe should be in a subgenre, feel free to add them to it.
