Vídeo Brinquedo, known as Toy Video, or Toyland Video in Portuguese, is a Brazilian animation studio located in São Paulo that produced low-budget and direct-to-video animated films widely viewed as mockbusters of comparable films from Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, DreamWorks Animation and Hasbro Entertainment. Effectively, alongside Dingo Pictures, it is the animation counterpart of The Asylum. The company was founded in 2004 to distribute children's animation with the intention of distribution in its home market of Brazil and other global markets. In 2014 they rebranded to Crianças Inteligentes and stopped producing DVDs, now they only produce YouTube videos.

Por Que Seus Filmes São Cópias Horríveis (Why Their Films Are Horrible Rip-Offs)

  1. First and foremost, all of their films, except for Brazilian Football Passion, are obvious rip-offs of other well-known animated movies, and even some live-action movies, such as Transformers and Star Wars.
  2. The films have atrocious CGI animation even for mid-to-late 2000s standards.
    • Also, their 2D animated films, such as Alice in Wonderland (2011), The Frog Prince, and Little Princess School aren't any better, as they all have horrible and choppy flash animation.
  3. Pretty much, their films have really poor Portuguese voice acting, and in some cases such as Ratatoing and The Little Cars in the Great Race, the first film, poorly done English dub voice acting.
  4. Their films have terrible plots and storytelling, which rip off numerous better films.
  5. There is some unfunny humor within their films, like the one part in The Little Panda Fighter, where the main character keeps crossing a bridge, during a training sequence, and to most people, it's rather considered boring.
  6. The title cards can be pretty bland and generic in most films.
  7. Even with the terrible plots the writing is also terrible, the writing just doesn't capture the charm of ripped-off movies.
  8. Many unlikable characters in the films have either lost all of their brain cells or are stereotypically mean-spirited.
  9. There is way too much padding in their films.
  10. The soundtracks can be pretty poor, like one of the tracks in, “The Little Panda Fighter”, that’s described to be, “a piano being smashed with a sledgehammer”.
  11. The dialogue can be pretty stupid most of the time.
  12. There are heaps of animation errors, within the CGI. For example, in Little Princess School, Cindy, Bianca, Hime, Iria, and Zade, the main characters, are always shown to be smiling, regardless of whatever emotion they're feeling, such as fear.
  13. There’s some pretty discriminatory racial stereotyping, such as the use of racist jokes, toward the French and Chinese, in What's Up: Balloon to the Rescue, and how Hime, the Chinese-Japanese princess, who is meant to be a rip-off of Fa Mulan from Mulan, has her eyes always slanted. This conveys the racial stereotype mentioning that Asians are blind in Little Princess School.
    • The films also contain some offensive sexist stereotypes, as well, such as how both Ratatoing, Little & Big Monsters, What's Up: Balloon to the Rescue, and Little Princess School, often depict their female protagonists, as incredibly dumb, and airheaded.
  14. As mentioned before, there is usually a lot of filler, in their movies, and it is usually painful to get through. For example, in Ratatoing, the first 10 minutes, or so, are just repetitive comments and feedback on the food at the restaurant.
  15. Despite their mockbuster films being aimed at children, some of their films such as Ratatoing and Little Princess School contain scenes that are rather inappropriate for their target audience. An example would be in Ratatoing, where Carol often walks in a rather sexually provocative manner. This is made worse by the fact that all the female rats in the film have visible breasts, and none of them wear clothes, which makes way for very uncomfortable scenes when Carol turns to the camera, and winks.
  16. The company logo looks extremely dull and effortless since it's just the studio's name with the letters in multiple colors.
  17. Its films are the main reason why the Brazilian animation industry had such a negative reputation in the 2000s and early 2010s. However, there was one good animated film that wasn't made by Brinquedo itself, giving redemption to Brazil, and Brazil actually has a great history with television animation nowadays, with shows like Fishtronaut, Earth to Luna, and especially Lupi & Baduki being prime examples of how the Brazilian television animation industry has evolved. So anyways, things from the past keep on the past.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The voice acting in their English dubs is pretty good, except for Ratatoing and The Little Cars in the Great Race until this film's sequels, using many of the same voice actors from 4Kids Entertainment.
  2. Some of their later films, while bad, were somewhat better than their older films.
  3. Soccer Passion is the only movie that wasn't ripped off by other original movies.
  4. Their films can be seen as "so bad, they're good" due to how low-budget they are and having some unintentionally funny moments.

Reception

All of Vídeo Brinquedo's films received extremely negative reviews, from both critics and audiences alike, with criticism being targeted, at their utterly shameless plagiarisms, of popular animated films from major Hollywood studios, such as Pixar, their overall extremely piss-poor production values, with zero quality control, whatsoever, such as their atrocious quality CGI animation, and their films containing needless amounts of filler scenes, which merely exist just to pad them out for, "feature-length".

Erik Henriksen, a reporter from The Portland Mercury, criticized Vídeo Brinquedo as being, "the laziest/cheapest movie studio of all time".

Trivia

  • They used to distribute DVDs for TV shows, like Sonic X, The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, and The Little Lulu Show, in Brazil.
  • After the studio stopped selling movies, they moved to YouTube, around 2013, where they posted, not only the movies and episodes they made in the past few years but also new content, made in flash animation, including a failed Peppa Pig rip-off, titled Chapeuzinho Vermelho e sua Turma. Recently, the channel name was changed to Crianças Inteligentes (Clever Kids).
  • The negative reception of Vídeo Brinquedo's films is later satirized, and mocked, in The Amazing World of Gumball episode, The Treasure, from season two, in 2012, via the mockbuster film How to Ratatwang Your Panda, which is a parody of the Vídeo Brinquedo mockbuster films, Ratatoing and The Little Panda Fighter, produced by Mic Graves Films, and the negative audience reactions, toward it.
