W.A.R. Soldiers: The True Story is a first-person shooter video game developed by Asylum Games and published by IncaGold in August 2002 only in Europe. The game takes place in the Vietnam war, more specifically in 1965.
Why It Truly Sucks
- The main menu itself gives bad impression of this game just before the player could even begin playing it. While the background is fine, one of the helicopters looks terrible and it looks as if the designer was so happy of their work that they wanted to put a crappy model on the title screen. The amount of settings is also small, being able to only change the resolution and other stuff, without even allowing you to change the contrast or change the full screen to a window. The resolution is also rather small, being only 1024x768.
- The weapons are really poorly reproduced and most cause the same amount of damage, regardless if you use the M21 or the AK-47. The opponent will still fall down after the exact same amount of damage for the most part, even if you use a weapon that looks like it should deal a huge amount of damage at the cost of slower speed.
- The mines don't even kill you in 1 hit like they should do, and instead cause 20 damage. while it still reduces 1/5 of your HP, it's still very poor and looks as if the developers did no research or didn't even knew how a mine works.
- Abysmal graphics for 2002 standards that look like it came from a very early 3D game released for the PS1. The bushes look like stock images taken straight from Google Images, the special effects look like they were done in MS Paint in 6 minutes by someone who wasted their talent on creating the special effects, the models are ugly and look as if they spent too much time underwater, and the animations are a real embarassment. The worst part about the graphics are the faces, especially on the enemies, who look nothing like they were Vietnamese and look as if someone at Asylum Games literally used their face for the model, which looks absolutely horrid for a 2002 FPS game.
- The game is ungodly short. Finishing the whole game takes up to 7 minutes, which can look as if IncaGold wanted Asylum Games to finish the game as fast as possible without even giving the game more levels to make the player spend more time.
- The A.I. is a complete failure; the enemies either just stay in place and shoot without even attempting to avoid you, walk a few steps and then start shooting, or will just go back and forth non-stop while trying to shoot you. It's like the enemies were given a weapon for the first time and didn't even know what to do once you approach them.
- The level design is pretty bad for a FPS; not only the levels are very small, but they're also full of corridors. While it is understandable since there were long and twisted tunnels made during the war, the developers went too far with it by making even the house a labyrinth. Even if there seems to be a level without them, there are invisible walls to shut down your exploring experience.
- The sound effects are very poor and hardly even resemble the sound effects the actual weapons make in real life, with the exception of the reload sound effects which look like stock sound effects taken from random site with sound effects. The sound effects for shooting weapons sounds like they were made in the kitchen and the sound effects of getting hurt sound like a young adult rather an an actual grown man getting hurt.
Reception
W.A.R. Soldiers: The True Story is so obscure that there are hardly even any reviews. However, German review site PC Games game the game a 3%, criticizing the graphics and the sound effects.[1]
