Wario Land 3 is a video game developed and published by Nintendo and released in 2000 for the Game Boy Color. It is the fourth installment in the Wario Land series and the successor to Wario Land II.

Plot

One day, Wario's plane stalls and crashes while he is flying over the woods. Uninjured, he spends the rest of his afternoon wandering amongst the trees and underbrush until he stumbles upon a mysterious cave. Inside the cave, he discovers a magical music box and is suddenly sucked into it. There, a mysterious figure informs Wario that he had once ruled the world inside the music box, until an evil being sealed away his magical powers in five music boxes. In exchange for freeing it, the being promises to send Wario back to his own world and let him keep any treasure he finds.

Why It's Perfect

  1. Uses several of Wario's forms from the previous installment and introduces a few new ones.
  2. Absolutely outstanding and awesome graphics, with a lot of details that make this game looking even better than Wario Land II, especially the colors palette which is better than the one from Wario Land II, which was rather drab in comparison of this game.
  3. This game added a day and night system which changes when Wario completes a level, which is interesting and it's even better here than in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (despite that game being decent), speaking of that game, the system is pretty similar.
  4. Borrows most of the previous game's gameplay elements.
  5. Each level has four treasures, making this game having a lot of replay values and it's make the game being kind of a Metroidvania, due to you having to use Wario abilities to get them or another place that you can only access when you get a specific ability.
  6. Each levels also requires the player collecting 8 Musical Coins, making this game having even more replay values.
  7. Good soundtrack that is very fun to listen to, and it fit the levels so much, in fact this game music is so good that you might even want to stay on the levels longer just to listen to the game soundtrack, kind of like Wario Land II or Kirby Block Ball.
  8. Decent and responsive controls, despite not being as good as Wario Land II, no matter the moment, Wario will never be unresponsive and he will always do the command you want, thank to how tight the controls are.
  9. There is more challenge to the game than Wario Land II, despite this game sometime being frustrating compared to Wario Land II, Wario Land 4 will even improve the challenge but not really frustrating.
  10. Really good level design, despite not being as good as Wario Land II, as some levels can be annoying at times, but the level design is still very great and very challenging, even for a Wario game, Wario Land 4 will even improve the level design.

Bad Qualities

  1. Some levels can be extremely frustrating and overral pretty annoying to complete, especially if you go for a 100% run.
  2. You still can't die in this game, with the exception of the final boss which can make you get a game over if he caught you.

Reception

Wario Land 3 received critical acclaim with many critics praising the colorful graphics, the soundtrack, the creativity and the level design, although some of them considered the game to be a bit too frustrating at times.

Trivia

  • Even after his identity is revealed, the final boss is still referred to as "A hidden figure." His real name, Rudy the Clown, wasn't revealed until his appearance in Dr. Mario 64.
