Weathering with You (Japanese: 天気の子 Hepburn: Tenki no Ko, lit. "Child of Weather") is a 2019 Japanese animated romantic fantasy drama film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, who is best known for the 2016 film Your Name. The movie was released on July 19, 2019 in Japan, and it was released on January 17, 2020 in the United States.

Plot

A high-school boy who has run away to Tokyo befriends a girl who appears to be able to manipulate the weather.

Why It Always Rains In Tokyo

  1. The film is a great follow up to Shinkai's previous film, Your Name, with it's fantasy elements put into a romantic story.
    • Taki and Mitsuha from the aforementioned film also appear briefly.
  2. With the film's premise, it questions: what if a country never stopped raining?
  3. Beautiful animation, which is a great step-up to Shinkai's other films. It really feels like you're in Tokyo due to how realistic it looks.
  4. Amazing performances, especially from Kotaro Daigo.
  5. Likable characters, such as Hodaka and Hina.
  6. A story about a boy befriending a girl who can control the weather is an amazing story, and it also works really well.
  7. There are a ton of incredibly moving moments in the film.
  8. Catchy soundtrack from Radwimps. Toko Miura even joins them too.
  9. Quotes like: "I need to see her again! Even if it's just once!" and "Who cares if we don't see the sunshine again, I want you more than any blue sky."
  10. This and also this

Bad Qualities

  1. The second half of the story is rather flawed, The goal of the movie is for Hodaka, Nagi and Hina to escape from Tokyo and it's evil cops and Hina fades and dies due to clearing the sunshine too much, letting Hodaka save Hina but Hodaka (and possible Hina and Nagi) gets arrested for 3 years in probation while not completing the goal.
  2. Kimura is a generic "stranger" character, who serves no purpose to the story. In the film, he shows no respect to homeless people like Taki, whenever he trips him for sleeping in the club, harassing Hina, and tried to kidnap Hina and Hodaka, who was forced to shoot him with a gun in self defense. After the incident, he no longer harasses Hodaka out of his seemingly, cowardice fear of gun shooting.
  3. Product Placement for McDonald's.
  4. The ending itself, despite the fact that it's heartwarming, everyone else in Tokyo still get a really unsatisfying ending. Sure, everybody knows that "love conquers all" right? Well, not exactly. After Hodaka brought Hina back to Earth, the never-ending rainstorm continues, causing the flood all over Tokyo to remain for 4 years, which means that the main antagonist of the film was Hodaka the whole time. He doesn't care about the citizens of Tokyo, he only cares about the girl he loves. He killed 37 MILLION PEOPLE (maybe half of the population in case they evacuated) over a girl he loves that controls the rain.

Reception

Early reviews from Japan have given Weathering with You a generally positive response. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that 94% of critics have given the film a positive review based on 9 reviews, with an average rating of 7.47/10.
