Wii Party is a party game developed by ND Cube and Nintendo and it was published in 2010 for the Wii. The game was released on July 8, 2010, in Japan, October 3, 2010, in North America, October 7, 2010, in Australia, and October 8, 2010, in Europe The game is similar to Mario Party, but with Miis playing party games.
Why It's a Party of a Year
- While it copies elements from Mario Party, this one is pretty clever, it features Miis playing party games, competing minigames, and teaming up with another Mii for a pair game.
- This game introduces Party Phil, a host from the said game that appears on many modes, especially Board Game Island.
- There are a total of 86 minigames in this game, and there are lots of 4-player minigames than those from Mario Party.
- There are four modes in this game:
- In Party Games, players will play this mode in 1-4 players and this will be your starting mode.
- In House Party Games, 2-4 players will cooperate to play in the living room or the bedroom instead of outside.
- In Pair Games, players can play solo or cooperate with a partner to play this game. Friend Connection and Balance Boat lets a partner join, while Match-Up is a 1vs1 game mode.
- And in Minigame Mode, players can play not just minigames, but also a series of challenges like Solo Mode.
- If you are not sure what you want to play, you can go to Suggestions and Party Phil will help you decide on what game to play.
- Not all modes are luck-based, like Globe Trot and Match Up.
- Some funny moments, especially when playing minigames like Dicey Descent (despite being a luck-based minigame), Maze Daze, and Goal Getters.
- Challenges also appear in this game, with a total of 7 (5 for solo and 2 for multiplayer).
- Decent soundtrack.
- Animation looks great.
- Although the box cover looks lazy as it has a white background with Mii playing different modes and minigames, this one looks creative and it has something to do with the premise.
- Spot the Sneak is a clever minigame challenge where 1 player known as the “Sneak” cheats on a minigame, and the other players try to find out who cheated in the minigame.
- In the challenge version of Clover Hunt, in the last 5 rounds, Mario from the NES version of Super Mario Bros. makes an appearance in this game.
Bad Qualities
- Some mediocre to bad minigames that are either luck based (Lucky Launch, Dicey Descent, Meet and Greet), frustrating or straight-up unfair (Crash Balls, Saucer Snap, Fruit Focus, Moon Landing), or have controls that are difficult to understand (Cry Babies, Quicker Chipper, Spring Ringers).
- There are only 5 1vs3 minigames, which is WAY too low of an amount for a Mario Party based game.
- In the Korean version, coins and medals were replaced with stars because of the gambling reference.
- Depending on your view, some modes can be hard to complete like Time Bomb, Balance Boat, and Bingo.
- There is no reward for completing all 30 stages in Garden Gridlock. Not even a placement in the rankings, because there are no rankings for this Challenge minigame.
- You cannot choose how many CPU opponents to play against in the Party Games or Minigames. You are forced to do 4-player every time. Thankfully, that problem has been resolved in Wii Party U.
- In fact, this was a reason why Flag Fraces and Flag Footrace are basically the same minigame. The only difference is that the former is a 4-player, and the latter is a 1vs1.
- If you’re playing with CPU Miis, you cannot manually choose which ones you want to play against and they’re always chosen at random. It can be annoying for fans of the CPU Miis (Unless you're using the Autoplay mode with multiple Wii Remotes and your Mii Channel Miis).
- The UFO mechanic in Board Game Island, while it sounds decent in concept, the execution is absolutely HORRENDOUS. You could lose so much progress given to another player, giving said player a cheap win, which absolutely ruins the fun and turns off players from playing Board Game Island ever again, even causing famous YouTuber Poofesure to damage one of his Wii Remotes over it.
- Probably the absolute worst offender of the awful UFO mechanic is the UFO space that is 2 spaces away from the final challenge! Meaning if you land on the space when you are in 1st place and if there is at least 1 opponent on the board, you are screwed.
- Thankfully, the UFO mechanic has been nerfed in Wii Party U since it only moves you to an opponent's spot rather than swapping spots, so it’s not so bad in Wii Party U’s Highway Rollers.
- You can only pair up with Master CPU Miis if you’re playing by yourself in Balance Boat, so if your favorite CPU Mii isn’t a Master Mii, too bad.
- The Mii sounds in Animal Tracker are creepy. Especially the laughing sound.
- The Expert Solo difficulty can be annoying to players, as the CPU Miis are very competitive and it seems like they cheat on you, making it more difficult to win.
Trivia
- This is the first Wii (not the console, the game franchise) game that Shigeru Miyamoto did not develop.
- The box cover art features Miis playing Spin-Off, Board Game Island, Globe Trot, Balance Boat, and Time/Word Bomb.
- Also, this one features Miis playing minigames such as Shifty Gifts, Derby Dash, Risky Railroad, Shutterpup, Bobsled Highway, and Spring Time.
