Wiimmfi is a homebrew online multiplayer service created for the Wii and Nintendo DS consoles by Wiimm and Leseratte as replacement for the now-defunct Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service in May 10, 2014 worldwide, hence the name Wiimmfi.
Initially, the development of Wiimmfi started in November 2012 by a single person, Wiimm, also with the main goal being to detect online hackers. Leseratte came along with Wiimm to help developing the online service after being involved in the mkw-ana (a tool that helps analyze the network traffic of Mario Kart Wii) development.[1]
Why It's the Best Homebrew Service to Exist
- First and foremost, it brings online multiplayer on Wii and Nintendo DS games back to life, most importantly Mario Kart Wii, allowing players to continue playing online games after the discontinuation of the original online service.
- The service is easily accessible, with multiple ways to patch the game, including a DNS patcher using the str2hax exploit, or by using the DNS to reroute any HTTP requests to the Wiimmfi server.
- It's completely free too!
- Since it was released 10 days earlier from the discontinuation of the NWFC, this would mean that players could immediately use Wiimmfi after the closure of the former.
- It's yet still running even after being out for 10 years as of now.
- Cheaters are punished, and with the help of IPs and the Wii NAND, any attempts of circumvention will be thwarted.
- As such, VPNs and Proxies are detected and banned.
Bad Qualities
- Not all online games support Wiimmfi, though, mostly because some of them are pretty obscure to this day. For a list of tested games using Wiimmfi, click [here].
- If you want to play Wiimmfi on Dolphin, you have to dump your console's NAND.
