World of Winx is an Italian Flash animated television series and a spin-off of Winx Club. The series was created by Iginio Straffi. Twenty-six episodes were produced in two seasons, the first of which was premiered as a Netflix original series on 4 November 2016.
Why It Sucks
- The series has a huge removal of characters from the original series, removing characters like the Specialists, the Trix, Kiko, Faragonda, Griselda and Bloom's adoptive parents, reducing only the Winx and Roxy returning. No character from the original series is even mentioned.
- There is also no mention of Magic Dimension or even the fact that Bloom, Stella, and Aisha are princesses, which also reinforces the idea that this series is more of a reboot than a spin-off.
- Continuity error: No one on Earth knows that Winx are fairies, and they try to keep it a secret, which doesn't make sense because in season 4 of the original series Winx tries to make people on Earth believe in fairies and in this same season the Earth fairies are rescued. This could easily be interpreted with the show occurring before season 4, but this is impossible due to the presence of Roxy who is a character that was introduced precisely in season 4.
- By the way, it is also unknown what transformation the Winx had before obtaining Dreamix which causes even more trouble for fans trying to fit the show into the continuity of Winx.
- Aisha's powers were inexplicably replaced, with her controlling water instead of her traditional Morphix.
- The animation is as cheap, stiff and artificial as the animation of seasons 5-8, which is ironic, because in addition to the series having a budget made by Netflix each season had only 13 episodes, half the episodes that the original series normally had per season!
- Just like in the seasons 5-8, Roxy had her role reduced by not being seen even transforming and helping the Winx to fight. Roxy is even removed in the second season.
- Many of the new characters are very unlikeable, mainly Ace and Lorelei.
- In the second season there are giant changes in the series with the reality TV show WOW not existing anymore (not even being mentioned), no character that appeared in the first season returning (besides Annabelle, Louise and the villains) and the fact that Winx now has a rock band, which makes the second season look like a soft reboot.
- In the second season, for unknown reasons the Winx are no longer seen transforming themselves on Earth but are seen transforming themselves only into the World of Dreams, which makes the action scenes on Earth including the battles against Nemesis very boring.
- The design of many of the characters is unoriginal, Tinkerbell in her evil form looks like the Evil Queen of Disney’s Snow White, the Shaman looks like Dhalsim from Street Fighter and Lorelei looks like an 80s Barbie doll.
- The art style, although it looks as beautiful as seasons 1-7, has a much lighter color palette which ended up making the characters' skin colors lighter to the point that Flora was practically whitewashed! Not only that, but in some artwork, Aisha also appears with white skin.
- The series ended with a huge cliffhanger where the Winx have their fairy identities revealed to the whole world and come across their next rival, Baba Yaga.
Redeeming Qualities
- The concept of Tinkerbell as a villain for Winx is really interesting.
- Dreamix and Onyrix are great new transformations.
- Some of the new characters, Crocodile Man, Alligator Man and Tiger Lily have really good designs.
- The Nemesis were interesting villains.
- The idea of Aisha controlling water instead of Morphix pleased some fans.
- The opening and ending songs and also the songs of the transformations are good and catchy.
- The series was at least an attempt to redeem itself with old fans with a more serious and mature series similar to the early seasons of the original series, since the main series has become more and more childish since season 5.
Reception
It has a score of 6.6/10 on IMDb and a 91% on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
