X-Men: Days of Future Past is a 2014 superhero film directed and co-produced by Bryan Singer and written by Simon Kinberg from a story he created with Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn. The film is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the X-Men, the fifth mainline installment of the X-Men film series, a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and X-Men: First Class (2011), a follow-up to The Wolverine (2013), and the seventh installment overall. It stars an ensemble cast, including Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Elliot Page[lower-alpha 1], Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart. The story, inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, focuses on two time periods, with Logan traveling back in time to 1973 to change history and prevent an event that results in unspeakable destruction for both humans and mutants.
Plot
Convinced that mutants pose a threat to humanity, Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) develops the Sentinels, enormous robotic weapons that can detect a mutant gene and zero in on that person. In the 21st century, the Sentinels have evolved into highly efficient killing machines. With mutants now facing extinction, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) volunteers to go back in time and rally the X-Men of the past to help prevent Trask's assassination - that if carried out - will lead to the creation of the Sentinel program.
Why It Rocks
- It retcons controversial events from the previous films out of existence, including the entirety of X-Men: The Last Stand and the infamous X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
- Amazing special effects.
- Awesome action scenes including the Pentagon kitchen scene (actually for that matter, the entire break-in), the battles with the Sentinels, and the fight on the lawn of the White House.
- It's great to see the old and new cast coming together in one film.
- Great acting, especially Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
- A good mix of action, adventure, science fiction, drama, and humor.
- It finally introduced the Sentinels which were shown as cameos in X-Men: The Last Stand.
- It also delivers a good message that the future is never truly set.
- John Ottman's X-Men theme from X2: X-Men United makes its triumphant return in this film. It is also heard during the end of the 20th Century Fox logo music, complete with the X being highlighted.
- It introduces us properly to Quicksilver, who is a big show stealer thanks to his sense of humor that manages to annoy even Charles Xavier, along with Evan Peters' amazing performance. It's almost unanimously agreed that this portrayal of Quicksilver is superior to the one in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
- The Sentinels are downright terrifying villains, despite having not much screen time.
- The scene where the X-Men perish one by one in the final fight was both amazing and emotional.
Bad Qualities
- Rogue is in the movie, but most of her scenes were cut out of the theatrical release due to time constraints. The only scene that remained is in the ending where Logan wakes up in the new timeline. Fortunately, her deleted scenes were re-added in the Rogue Cut re-release.
- The major retcons majorly complicate the timeline of the overall franchise.
