Yetisports is a series of winter themed sports flash games, originally developed by Edelweiss Medienwerkst and later changed to ROOT9 Medialab, the games we're later ported to the PS1 and PC as YetiSports Deluxe and World Tour by JoWooD Productions, it later received it's own console and PC spin off titled Yetisports Arctic Adventures.
Plot
The games are about a yeti, who wants to teach his little penguin friends how to fly, by using the as perephial for the sports games, he uses them to teach.
Gameplay
The games are all sports games, with each time being a different sport, Pengu throw, you hit a penguin with the bat at the right time and make sure he flies as far as possible, Orca Slap, penguins get launched by an Orca whale and you throw a snowball to hit them to a dartboard, Seal Bounce, You throw a penguin as high as you can, the seals help you to get them higher, Albatross overload, you throw the penguin plus an albatross will help you get them as long as you can, Flamingo Drive, you use a flamingo to throw the penguin as far as you can, Big Wave, you surf and have to collect the penguins, Jungle Swing, you swing as far as high as you can on tree branches, Final Spit, You shoot the penguins and llamas with a shotgun and Icicle Climb, You use ice picks and throw them to help the penguin climb.
Why They Suck
Overall
- The games are very repetitive and boring, for the most part, you just simply click at the right time to hit the penguin, or use the sports gear in some of the games, not to mention, the point is just to get as many points as you can.
- False Advertising: The Deluxe edition, advertises that it has 4 games in one package, when it's just 2 games with 2 different variations, not to mention there's almost no difference between them, and are just minor at best. As of now, the pictures of the yetis and the penguins on the official website, look nothing like how they do in the actual game, on the pictures they look cartoonish yet in the game they look semi-realistic.
- The Deluxe edition doesn't improve anything from the original flash games, it is simply just a straight port on the desktop and the PS1, But in that addition, it costs money, while the original browser games are free.
- Nonsensical and stupid plot, apparently The yetis and penguins are supposed to be friends, yet they use the penguins more as they're victims to torture them than actually teaching them to fly, not to mention in the 9th game, you actually kill them with a shotgun.
- To that point, despite the fact the games look like they're targetted at kids, in the 9th game, the penguins bleed after you kill them, not to mention the blood looks really fake.
- While the graphics are decent for an old flash game, the PS1 versions of Deluxe and World Tour are ugly to look at, due to their texture compression, Arctic Adventures in particular looks the ugliest due to the ugly 3D models, the Xbox, and PC versions don't look any better than the PS2 version.
- The sound design in these games are awful, and the Music is also generic, the Theme Song is extremely annoying, as it's just a man in the Mic making awful ear-bleeding Yeti noises, Not to mention some of the flash games don't have any music at them at all.
- Tasteless humor that's not even that funny at all, speaking of the humor, it just seems like pointless and generic slapstick humor that just get stale after a while.
Original Flash, Deluxe, and World Tour
- The gameplay is pretty much nonexistent, all you simply do is click on the screen to hit the penguins with various items and or throw something else at them, they're also so easy since once you understand you will immediately do well since there is no difficulty with them.
- Some of the games are never-ending and just keep going on forever unless you quit them.
- While most games are winter-themed the later games changed the theme to a more exotic jungle environment, while it's not really a bad thing, it makes no sense for a yeti and an arctic penguin to even be on an exotic jungle.
- In Pingu Throw there is no strength, to hit the penguin instead it's luck based meaning that every time you hit the penguin, the length will be different, Also in Orca slap, you can't even change the position of where you'll throw the snowball making them for the most part to be the exact same.
- In addition, some of the goals in certain sports are inaccurate to their real-life counterparts, for example in the golf one you just hit the penguin as far as you can to get the score, instead of sinking him to a hole or anything.
- The Big Wave game is broken, it is surfing, but the controls are really hard to get used to, also you have to touch the penguins but still not to mention, it is hard to hit them, making it even more unfair.
- The PS1 versions are even more broken, due to having lots of bugs that weren't present in the original flash games or the PC versions.
Arctic Adventures
- The whole game just uses the exact same games as before but it's even worsened here due to transitioning from 2D to 3D, they were all transitioned really poorly because they were most likely not designed to work in a 3D environment next reasons will show some worse aspects.
- The controls in most of the games are awful, it should be noted that the PS2 version requires the EyeToy camera, but despite this, the experience is the same, in the pc version using the keyboard makes it so much more impossible than with a controller.
- Most of the collectibles are just simply more points to increase your score, and the powerups don't help that much, all they do is increase time and speed that's it nothing else.
- Aiming in the snowboarding minigame is really hard, due to how clunky and off it feels, not to mention there's no losing factor to them, as you can just simply win without even throwing the penguins.
Redeeming Qualities
- The graphics for an early flash game are decent, despite not aging the best.
- Arctic Adventures did improve the Pingu throw game, as now there's a meter showing how hard you hit the penguin.
