Yo-Kai Watch is a 2014 Japanese supernatural comedy anime series created by Shinzo Ushiro and aired from January 8, 2014 until March 30, 2018. The anime is based on the 2013 video game of the same name, a movie based on the sequel was released on December 2014.
Summary
The anime primarily focuses on Nathan Adams, who meets Whisper after he was sealed away in a capsule for 200 years. Along the way, he meets Jibanyan and goes on to find other Yo-kai that are known behind various daily occurrences.
Why It Rocks
- The animation is very nicely detailed, and also resembles the cutscenes in the game, due to being animated by the same company as the Animal Crossing movie and even The Pokémon Anime.
- It still retains the charm from the first two games.
- Pretty good voice acting for every dub, with Johnny Yong Bosch doing a decent job as Nathan Adams.
- The humor is very funny and is even wackier than before.
- All the characters still remain their charm and are still also likeable, especially Jibanyan.
- Pretty good morals in each of the episodes, which is rare when compared to Pokémon.
- It's a pretty good alternative for those who dislike the Pokémon anime.
- Most of the episodes are very good or decent such as:
- Jibanyan’s Secret (which is regarded as the best episode in the series.)
- Yo-kai Cadin
- Yo-Kai Nosirs
- It spawned three movies and a spin-off which was, if not, better than the show.
- The segments in each episode are very decent and are also a decent break time for people to enjoy, such as "Komasan In the City", "Komasan In Love" and "The Great Dog Escape"
Bad Qualities
- It can somewhat get disturbing at times, such as the episode where Nate encounters Gargaros.
- Like the games, there’s toilet humor such as Katie farting due to being inspirited by a Yo-Kai named Cheeksqueak, which is a Yo-Kai that has a face which is a literal butt.
- It somewhat feels like a rip-off of Pokémon due to having the same concept and also the same type of character design, though this might be due to having the same animation company.
- Whisper is somewhat flanderized in this series, as he went from a funny but smart butler to Nate into a maniac that always have meltdowns and also believes that not all people are inspirited by a Yo-Kai.
- Some moments can be extremely suggestive, with the most notable example being the episode Yo-kai B3-NK1.
- Little after the release of Yo-kai Watch 3, the show stopped being dubbed due to budget cuts from Viz Media and that the anime in the west has failed badly (due to the much more hyped up Amphibia), now only being on Japanese. Fortunately, some episodes have subtitles.
Reception
Despite being controversial from religious people and Pokémon fans, it was met with positive reviews from critics and fans of the games with praise for the animation and humor.

Trivia
- Due to being infamous for being similar to Pokémon and also due to being infamous with religious parents and communities for using demons, the show, in fact the whole franchise was unpopular in the United States, and had low ratings on Disney XD, due to which Disney decided to remove the show in 2019.
- However, despite being unpopular in the United States, it was popular in other countries like India and Hispanic America, but mainly in Japan.
- Another reason as to why the show declined in ratings was most likely due to voice acting replacements, due to budget cuts from Viz Media, which the audience disliked.
- It had a much more dramatic and more adult crossover with the GeGeGe no Kitarō manga in the anime film and spin-off, Yo-Kai Watch Shadowside before rebooting the original series in 2019 and 2021.
- The episode mentioned in BQ#5, Yo-kai B3-NK1 was considered to risque for the main aundience, to the point the episode was heavily censored and in some places like Latin America it was never aired.
- Most of the Japanese voice actors are female, even including the male characters as well.
- This is the first animated series to be based on Level-5 property, the second is The Snack World.
- Johnny Yong Bosch was previously known for playing as Adam Park, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Yu Narukami, and Tohru Adachi (both from Persona 4).
