Yo-kai Watch 4 is an action role-playing video game developed and published by Level-5 for the Nintendo Switch. As indicated by the name, it is the fourth game of the main series of Yo-kai Watch video games; unlike the preceding Yo-kai Watch 3 (international versions notwithstanding), 4 was initially released only as a single version in Japan in June 2019. An enhanced version titled Yo-kai Watch 4++ was released for the Switch and PlayStation 4 in Japan in December 2019.
Why It Deserves a Yo-kai Keystone
- For starters, the story is great, combined with Shadowside elements that can be mix between original and Shadowside.
- Nice graphics that are a step up from the 3DS games.
- Decent control, the characters no longer utilize a stamina bar to run. However, when in the battle, you must have the stamina bar.
- Also, the camera is better now, making finding the collectibles much easier.
- The map is large and you can teleport anytime.
- The gameplay is an improvement over the original games, and despite being a bit downgraded, it still does a good job to make combat fun.
- While there aren't as many mini-games as the previous installment, it does have some interesting minigames, like Stealth sections and various other puzzles.
- Stealth sections are new to this game: your objective is to avoid Yo-kai and sneak past them without get caught, and if you get caught, you get thrown away instantly.
- There's the puzzle section, where you find certain objective to think.
- You can transform into Yo-kai for situational reasons.
- You can still steal the soul by pressing the button to get them and steal it, then you can get Yo-Kai monster.
- You can also drain the Yo-Kai energy to stun the bosses.
- Speaking of Yo-kai, there are so many Yo-Kai you can choose from, including many new Yo-kai from Shadowside and the movies, and some original Yo-Kai.
- You can upgrade the Yo-Kai and the owner to making it better.
- You can play again once your finishing the game, making more replay value.
- There's so many funny moments here and there.
- Decent soundtrack, in fact, the Gera-Gera Po song are still memorable to hear it.
- Great voice acting and those cast are reprising from the movies and anime.
- There's new updated version called "Plus Plus" with new content, new Yo-Kai, new stories, all of the expansion is here, including a new one, and best of all is multiplayer, it's easily the best multiplayer on this game.
- And what's more interesting is the PlayStation 4 is improved in every way, from improved the frame-rate and increasing the resolution. Now PlayStation users can enjoy to play Yo-kai Watch 4 on your PlayStation 4 hardware.
- You can trade this game both keystone and medal.
Bad Qualities
- While the graphics are nice, the performance can be quite annoying due to the frame-rate hiccups. Fortunately, the PS4 doesn't have any frame-rate drops.
- Disappointingly, the game doesn't port to the PC. It's kinda odd that some Level-5 games such as Ni no Kuni did get port to the PC. Unless your play on emulator to play this game with the exception; the online play features.
- Some Yo-kai can be hard to find.
- Some bosses are hard, really hard. For example: One of the bosses named Lady Arachnia is really hard, they attack you with so many projectiles that somehow hit you in one hit.
- As per usual, this game still has the reskin problem, making many Yo- kai feel the same but with different statistics.
- Combat of this game is a bit downgraded compared to the original three games, you just mas the button many times until the Yo-kai tire out.
- The special attack are also a bit downgraded, as there are only three types of special attacks.
- The Crank-A-Key gacha mini-games is easily one of the worst mini-game in the Yo-kai Watch games history, and it's even worse here. Why? Because this gacha mini-game is really luck-based. Sure, other Crank-a-Kai and Dream Wheel games were luck-based as well, but still.
- Also, it is highly rigged, so if you got just a generic item, you're screwed Thankfully, this gacha mini-games is entirely optional, but you may have to use this to get healing items for battles.
- Unlike the previous installments (with the exception of Busters 2), this game was never released outside of Japan unless there are fan-translations, making the English players unable to understand Japanese.
- Another thing worth mentioning: due to Level-5's American branch being closed, the game will likely never be localized.
Reception
The game received a positive reviews. While not many critics has been reviewing this game, the game got positive reception from internet reviewers.
The game is sold pretty well in Japan. Sadly, for outside of Japan, it didn't get localized due to poor sales. And worse, is the Level-5's American Branch are closed.
