Yoshi's Story, released in Japan as Yoshi Story (ヨッシーストーリー Yosshī Sutōrī?), is a side-scrolling platform game, published and developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was first released on December 21, 1997 in Japan; March 9, 1998 in North America; and May 10, 1998 in PAL region.

Why It Rocks

  1. There are 8 colors you can play as, which instead of being a specific Yoshi in a level, they are playable in every levels, and those also serve as a lives system, even though the Yoshi play identically.
    • Red
    • Pink
    • Yellow
    • Green
    • Blue
    • Light Blue
    • Black
    • White
  2. The controls are very fluid and solid, much like the original, being fast and extremely responsive, which make the game even more fun to play, and is another fast paced platformer.
  3. While the game is too easy, the gameplay is still very fun and it is mostly because the game is fast paced due to the controls, and because of that, it make the game having more fun than it should have, especially when you consider how easy the game is.
  4. Awesome soundtrack, with the exception of the ending theme (see BQ#1), as the soundtrack is quite catchy and jolly to listen to, some are also epic such as the castle theme or the Bowser theme.
  5. Appealing, colorful, and lively graphics, especially by Nintendo 64 standards, as this game has clean textures, unique and creative backgrounds, extremely animated animations, and vibrant colors and also combines with 3D environments and even a 2D aesthetic.
    • The art style look great despite being different from the original, especially the Yoshi's themself, which look cute as usual, also, the art style manage to be more realistic in comparison to the original Yoshi's Island.
  6. The story, while simple, is nice and decent for a Yoshi or even a kid game for that matter.
  7. The Yoshis are once again very cute, especially on the box art.
  8. While way too easy and overall not good, the bosses concepts are very interesting and unique, even though not as creative as in the original Yoshi's Island.
  9. This was Nintendo 64's follow up to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, even the gameplay is similar.
  10. Ton of replay values are present in this game, and they are way bigger than in the original, especially because of the fact that the game can't be fully beaten in one playthough, since the other levels need to be unlocked and you had to get the heart collectibles to do so, which is a good way to unlock levels.
  11. The game had a good moral of habing happyness, and while the moral could appear as cliche for some peoples, it is a good moral for kids.

Bad Qualities

  1. The ending song is horrid, and is one of the worst songs Totaka has ever composed, at least the second half of it.
  2. The bosses are incredibly limited, bland, and too easy, in game, there are three different boss battles (four if counting the final boss), but in world 2, you can only fight one out of the three normal bosses and then the final boss, this means that the story mode only has two boss battles, which is a very odd design choice.
  3. The game is very short since passing a level sends you to the other world suddenly, and can be completed in around 45 minutes. The fact that the game is lacking in difficulty doesn't help matters either.
  4. While it is a good game, this game had a somewhat biased hatebase because of the fact that rather than getting to the goal to finish a level, you had to eat 30 fruits to finish a level, which turned off some fans and in fact, because of this reason, some peoples even call this the weakest Yoshi game next to New Island, which is not really true worse Yoshi games were released after this one.
  5. The game is incredibly easy, so much that it make Yoshi's Woolly World harder by comparison, since when you get hit, you still find so many items to regenerate your life bar, and the enemies are very easy to dodge, even the bosses are very easy.

Reception

Yoshi's Story received mixed to positive reviews, it was praised for being easy to play, for having good graphics and for the great soundtrack, howewer it was criticized for being way too easy and for being way too short, as well as being not as good as Yoshi's Island.

The game had a score of 65/100 on Metacritic.

Trivia

  • In an early beta of Yoshi Story, the Yoshis were going to make the same sounds Yoshis made in Super Mario World.
  • In an early beta screenshot, it was shown that Brown Yoshi and Purple Yoshi were going to be playable characters at some point during development. However, they were replaced with White Yoshi and Pink Yoshi respectively.
  • This is one of few Yoshi games that Mario doesn't appear in. However, he is mentioned by Baby Bowser during the final boss battle.
