Aaahh!!! Real Monsters is an American animated television series developed by Klasky Csupo for Nickelodeon. The show focuses on three young monsters — Ickis, Oblina and Krumm — who attend a school for monsters under a city dump and learn to frighten humans. Many of the episodes revolve around them making it to the surface in order to perform "scares" as class assignments.

The series premiered Saturday, October 29, 1994, at 11 am on Nickelodeon. It ran a total of 52 episodes over 4 seasons and the last episode aired on December 6, 1997 (the same day the Magic School Bus ended).

Plot

The episodes follow the adventures of Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm, three young monsters attending a monster school whose headmaster is the Gromble.

The show is set in New York City, demonstrated throughout the series by the presence of the Empire State Building and an Independent Subway System. The dump the monsters inhabit is implied to be Fresh Kills Landfill, but never explicitly named in the series. The monster community includes a working economic system using toenails as currency.

Why It's AAAHH!!!-some

  1. Smooth and fluid animation with details visuals just like other classic Nickelodeon shows, it helps that this is Klasky Csupo's second show, with the first being Rugrats from 1991.
  2. Original and unique plot about three monsters going to school.
  3. Awesome voice acting by Charlie Adler (Chicken and Cow), the late Christine Cavanaugh, (Chuckie from Rugrats (Seasons 1-7), the titular character of Dexter's Laboratory (Seasons 1-3a), David Eccles, and Gregg Berger.
  4. The theme song is catchy.
  5. Nice eerie-sounding music that fits the dark tone of the show.
  6. It's Nickelodeon's done-right version of Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon.
  7. Hilarious and cleverly hidden adult jokes.
  8. Likable and memorable characters, such as Ickis, Oblina, Krumm, and The Gromble.

AAAHH!!!-ful Qualities

  1. It has lots of gross-out humor and disturbing moments.
  2. Very ugly character designs, though this was most likely intentional since they're monsters.
  3. There are some bad episodes such as:
    • The Rival
    • Hats Off
    • Amulet of Enfarg
    • Bad Hair Day
    • Slumber Scare (which ended Season 3 on a sour note)
  4. The pacing isn't very good.
  5. Ickis and the Gromble can be unlikable at times.
  6. Almost all of the supporting characters, such as Horrifica, Hairyette, Borl, Smeldra, Dizzle, Swamwump, Ocka, and several others are barely given any screentime in the show since nearly all episodes only focus on the main trio, making them background and forgettable characters.
