Angry Birds is a Finnish video game franchise invented by Jaakko Iisalo. The franchise itself has lasted for roughly 10 years, from December 11, 2009. Ever since the release of Angry Birds Action and the movie based on it in 2016, most games released after that were either mediocre to downright garbage. Due to the new CEO of Rovio joining them in 2021, the franchise now may become as great as it once was, due to releases of such games as Angry Birds Reloaded, and re-rereleasing most of the older games, such as the original on March 31st, 2022.

Why It Was Once Angry

  1. Rovio tended to milk it; this may explain why they removed non-Angry Birds-related games.
  2. Since 2017 (as of now), a lot of games were unfairly shut down or removed from the app stores, which can upset and anger a lot of people nowdays. Thankfully, they're planning to bring back all the games that don't require licenses from Disney via 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm.
    • Angry Birds Football, Angry Birds Holiday, Angry Birds Ace Fighter, and Angry Birds Dice were shut down during their soft release only a few months after release.
    • Angry Birds Stella was also shut down due to being abandoned and never having Episode 3.
    • Angry Birds Fight! was also shut down due to many hackers and cheaters. However, it wasn't Rovio who shut down its servers. One of its co-developers, Kiteretsu Inc. shut down the servers for the game.
    • In August 2019, they also removed Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Space, Bad Piggies, and Angry Birds Rio for unknown reasons, with the latter due to an expired license. It doesn't help that those were all considered some of the best Angry Birds games and that those games were successful enough to get ports to consoles and PCs, meaning that these games won't be lost to time thankfully (not all levels ever made for these games will be included, keep that in mind).
    • In October 2019, they even took down the original Angry Birds Classic game from app stores. Like with the other best Angry Birds games, the only way to obtain them legally at the moment is to redownload it if you downloaded the game before 2019, buy used physical copies of the game on PC, and through used copies of the Angry Birds Trilogy.
    • And to add insult to injury, 2019 was the 10th anniversary of the original Angry Birds, and thus, lacking the Birdday 10 levels. Jurassic Pork was the last set of levels to ever be released in the original Angry Birds game.
    • Rovio's excuse for removing their old games was "for testing purposes", without clearly explaining what the testing was.
    • Before 2021, they were saying that they removed the old games because they just don't want to update them to work on modern mobile devices, yet there were other games around that haven't been updated in over 5 years that still work on new mobile devices, such as BuddyPoke and Where's My Water, which makes it hypocritical for Rovio.
    • Very recently, Bad Piggies returned but was filled to the very top with ads just like every other pre-movie game.
    • Not only were some games in the franchise removed, but various non-Angry Birds games by Rovio were also removed such as Amazing Alex, Tiny Thief, Retry, Sky Punks, and many more, which shows that Rovio only cares for the Angry Birds, and not other games.
    • Toons.TV was shut down in 2017 and was moved to the Angry Birds YouTube channel, meaning unless they have Netflix, young children not allowed on YouTube will not be able to watch Angry Birds animations.
    • Adding insult to the injury, the original Angry Birds Toons cartoons, Piggy Tales, and Stella were all removed from Netflix, forcing you to go to Roku Channel or YouTube!
  3. The original Angry Birds was milked to no end. First, it changed from a paid game with no ads nor IAPs into a free-to-play ad-fest. Then in December 2018, every player's progress was removed had they updated the game to the final version. Also, you can’t play the rest of the episodes in Angry Birds Rio unless you finish the previous episode or watch an ad. As said before, they eventually gave up with the old games in the franchise's 10th anniversary and took them all down, but this was all due to the poor decisions made by the previous CEO of the company.
  4. The original Angry Birds isn't the only game that gets players' data reset either; this happened with a lot of games like Angry Birds Go! and Transformers.
  5. Pretty much every pre-film game is filled to the brim with ads, depending on your device. They also had all the fun sucked out of them, turning them either bad or mediocre. While they are other games from other companies like Cut the Rope and the iOS and Android port of Plants vs. Zombies that became filled with ads nowadays, they still don't require anything like microtransactions or other things to unlock levels.
    • The original Angry Birds game now uses stars to unlock levels just like Super Mario 64.
    • Seasons just requires you to use coins to unlock episodes from 2013 and older. (a.k.a. The episodes that use Classic or Chrome designs as opposed to Toons-styled characters).
    • Rio, like it was said before, has all the episodes be unplayable until you finish the previous episode or watch an ad.
    • Star Wars II has never had an update relating to the Sequel Trilogy, let alone there was never a "Star Wars III" in development.
    • GO! was ruined. Absolutely ruined. "Rocky Road" and "Air" swapped places, the interface changed to look more boring, and the game gets really hard after you unlock Matilda.
    • Angry Birds POP! has become bland after Stella's flock was replaced by Red's flock (except Hal and Bubbles). The hatchlings from the movie also show up to replace the critters, but their designs clash heavily with the Toons style that Red's flock is in.
    • Angry Birds 2 has the roulette, which could be considered gambling. Also, the more times you get a pig, the more expensive it is to try again.
    • The only surviving one is Transformers, as it was updated for 2020 and looks the same as it was in 2014 when it was released.
  6. Their spin-off games are unoriginal. Angry Birds Match? A redo of Nibblers. Angry Birds Blast? A ripoff of Toon Blast and Toy Blast.
  7. They have made two of their pre-film games mediocre as well. They removed Stella’s flock’s permanent playable status in Angry Birds Pop! and replaced them with the original flock, and made the functions bland in Angry Birds Go!, and the game gets very hard after you unlock Matilda.
  8. The modern games were boring, except for Angry Birds AR/VR: Isle of Pigs and to some extent, The Angry Birds Movie 2: Under Pressure on PS4 VR.
  9. Also, only Red, Chuck, Bomb, and later Silver are the only characters who first appeared in the pre-film games to be playable in the games released after the film. The others from the main flock? None. Stella’s Flock? Nada. Seriously Rovio, if you’re gonna make decent games, at least let the others be in the games, or quit making these your cash cows! (or cash chickens, which would make more sense.)
  10. Sometimes, the levels in some of the games are very unfair.
  11. Since Angry Birds 2, they stopped making ports of the games on Roku streaming devices and Amazon tablets (Except for Angry Birds Match) for no reason.
  12. Ever since 2018, they no longer make you sign up to your accounts, which in all cases, makes your data reset if you don't have one (at least in some of the last versions of the game).
  13. Angry Birds Evolution is considered to be the weakest Angry Birds game, which is at least better than most of the match-3 spinoffs, which are mostly straight-up terrible.
  14. Despite fans telling them to do so, they haven't restored the deleted games to stores, even after AB's 10th anniversary, until they announced plans to do so.
  15. Three games were discontinued in 2020 due to expired licenses and licensing issues from Disney. Those three games were Angry Birds Rio, Star Wars, and Star Wars II. This means that these games will no matter what, never return to app stores, and you can also no longer purchase items in the game with real money, however, you can still play them if you still have it, or download the APKs.
  16. Most of the new games don't feel like Angry Birds games anymore like Angry Birds Pop.
  17. For some reason, on a lot of their older Angry Birds games, they kept changing the title screen music to inferior remixes with no option to turn it back to the original music.
  18. Rovio milks the Hatchlings (except The Blues) to the point where they only really exist to sell merchandise and act as filler characters. At least in the first movie, they had some reason to exist.
  19. In January 2021, Rovio & Chimera removed the arena & events in Angry Birds Epic. It doesn't help that those were the only things that kept the game alive. And people enjoyed those things in Epic.
  20. As of 2020, Rovio is now starting to copy Playrix's practices called false advertising. As they released an Angry Birds 2 fake ad where Red needed to go to the bathroom, but Bomb was in there. We ain't kidding.
  21. Angry Birds Space was removed on Steam, so now the only way to get the Steam version is to find someone who still has a copy of a gift or by downloading it on the Internet Archive.
  22. Rovio Classics: Angry Birds wasn't the best way to begin the franchise's return because this is when Rovio started to do the Nostalgia Pandering thing similar to Sega. It is filled with glitches and is missing other classic episodes like Red's Mighty Feathers and Short Fuse.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. The graphics are good.
  2. At least the games have enjoyable gameplay.
  3. Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Transformers, and a few others are still good.
  4. The AR game, Isle of Pigs, was pretty good as well.
  5. Development of new Angry Birds games has at the very least much neededly reduced by 2020, compared to back in 2016-2018.
  6. You can still play some of the older games on Amazon tablets since they haven't been removed from the Amazon store page.
  7. In 2020, Rovio brought back the spinoff, Bad Piggies, at the very least.
  8. In 2021, Rovio finally responded to the backlash regarding all of the classic games except Bad Piggies being delisted. They plan to remake most of the games (the ones that don't require licenses) and rerelease them on a new engine, trying to replicate their original versions as closely as possible, due to Rovio finally getting a new CEO. Despite this, they only plan to do the original at the moment. Angry Birds (2022) was released on March 31st, for 99c without microtransactions.
  9. The franchise has started to redeem itself and thus coming back to its former glory in 2021, because new games such as Bad Piggies 2 & Angry Birds Reloaded will be released, and Rovio finally announced the return of the older games like Classic, Seasons, Space, Go!, & Stella, etc. due to Rovio getting a new CEO.
  10. The Angry Birds haven't been flanderized and are still likable.
