Big Sister Sam is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from Season 7.

Plot

Patrick's older sister Sam comes to visit him.

Why Is A Big Bad Sister

  1. Continuity error: It contradicts what's established in the episode "Something Smells" from Season 2, where Patrick states he doesn't have a sister. In other words, this is yet another episode that reminds us of SpongeBob's lack of consistency in terms of continuity.
  2. The beginning of the episode has Patrick singing horribly, even though we've heard him singing decently in the past.
  3. Sam is an extremely unlikable character who gets angry for the pettiest of reasons and goes on massive rampages and acts like the victim whenever Patrick is around.
  4. This is yet ANOTHER episode where it seems like the whole universe has it in for Squidward. It's also a SpongeBob torture episode, albeit to a lesser extent.
  5. Since this is dark era SpongeBob, expect the animation to have gone subpar at best.
    • Speaking of the world being against the two, the amount of torture both Squidward and SpongeBob go through is undeserved and it happens to them for no reason.
  6. It's another one of those episodes in seasons 6-8 where Patrick is an unlikable jerk as he is just as bad as, if not worse than Sam, showing how his flanderization has once again gone too far.
    • In the beginning of the episode when Sam shows up, Sam grabs and throws SpongeBob in front of Patrick, and yet all Patrick does is just ignores SpongeBob and shows Sam his house.
    • He never calls Sam out for destroying Squidward and SpongeBob's houses.
      • In fact the most infamous example is the part where Patrick smiles at Sam after the later throws Squidward's Bulldozer at SpongeBob's house.
    • He shows no care for Squidward and even SpongeBob when he is confronted about Sam's behavior and accuses them of being mean to Sam when it is the other way around.
    • When SpongeBob confronts Patrick about Sam's behavior, he accuses SpongeBob of being a bad friend to him.
  7. Sam goes as far as destroying Patrick's home towards the end and accidentally injures him in the act. Even after this, Patrick still doesn't call her out.
  8. On that note, after the bulldozer scene, Squidward is literally dropped out of the episode and is never seen or mentioned again.
  9. Sam never gets punished for her actions.
  10. Out of nowhere, after Sam launches the bulldozer at SpongeBob's house, Squidward doesn't appear again for the rest of the episode.
  11. Much like the infamously hated Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends episode "Imposter's Home for Um... Make 'Em Up Pals", this episode tries a very lame attempt of a heartwarming ending by having Sam leave, Patrick pleads her to stay, only for her to say that she needs her nails done.
    • Speaking of which, although it seemed that she regretted her actions, Sam only wanted to leave to polish her nails, which is out of nowhere. Let alone make the ending completely rushed.
      1. To make it worse, It ends Season 7 (in number code) in the very bad note.
  12. Though Squidward is likable in this episode, it was mean for him to call Sam a big buffoon.
    • To be fair, this can be understandable since Sam usually started the conflict first.
  13. The title card for this episode is poorly-done, since the "Sister" is not even in the same large font as for "Big" and "Sam".

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Some funny moments here and there.
  2. SpongeBob and Squidward are likable in this episode.
  3. Despite being extremely unlikable, Sam has some funny moments.
  4. Fortunately, it is Sam's only appearance in the entire show and later in the show's spin-off called "The Patrick Star Show", Sam is replaced by a squid to be Patrick's sister.

Reception

  • Mr. Enter ranked this episode as the fourth-worst "Patrick's a Prick" episode.

Trivia

  • This episode retconned Patrick's statement about not having a sister back in "Something Smells", although this can be excused as Patrick's poor memory regarding his family since he didn't even recognize his real parents in "I'm with Stupid".
    • Continuity can be hard to follow after so many seasons as well.
