Summary

SpongeBob pretends to be stupid in order for Patrick to look smart in front of his parents, which starts off good, until Patrick's attitude gets in the way.

"Stupid" Qualities

  1. To get the elephant out of the room: This episode is infamous for being very cruel to poor SpongeBob as he is trying to do Patrick a favor that'll make his "parents" Janet and Marty respect Patrick a little bit more.
    • What doesn't help is that revealed later in the episode, Janet and Marty aren't even Patrick's real parents, making this SpongeBob torture episode completely pointless.
  2. Patrick is at his absolute worst as he treats SpongeBob as if he's actually stupid, when the guy is trying to convince him that he isn't truly stupid.
    • Sure, Patrick isn't the brightest character on the show, but he was never that bright to realize his best friend's idea in the first place.
  3. Patrick doesn't like being treated like he's stupid by his parents (he is dimwitted, however, but that's besides the point), but him treating SpongeBob in the same manner his parents did to him makes him come off as hypocritical.
  4. Some Plot-Holes:
    • How does Janet and Marty know Patrick and where he lives if they never had a son?
    • Somehow, in the scene where SpongeBob has had enough of Patrick, Janet and Marty's behavior, when he comes of Patrick's house, it makes a hole in the wall, why there a sky behind it when Patrick's house is underground?
  5. Janet and Marty are very unlikable and annoying characters, with their laughter quickly becoming stale with Janet's being the worst offender.
  6. The pacing isn't very good.
  7. Patrick never apologizes to SpongeBob for his rude behavior nor get called out for it, making him a Karma Houdini.

"Smart" Qualities

  1. SpongeBob, Squidward and Patrick's real parents are likable characters.
  2. SpongeBob biting Patrick's finger was satisfying to see and it later became his down special in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.
  3. The ending was very nice where Patrick reunites with his real parents, but that still won't excuse Patrick's behavior.
  4. Some funny jokes and lines such as:
    • The note and letter is one of the greatest visual gags in not only the entire episode but the entire series as well.
    • Patrick laughs after Janet and Marty reacted to SpongeBob's house.
    • "Janet?! Marty?! Who are you people?!" - Patrick
    • "Marty, I'm scared!" - Janet
    • "Oh, that's right, honey! We don't have a son!" - Marty
  5. The premise of this episode could've been executed better if it weren't for Patrick's behavior.
