Dumped is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season two.

Plot

SpongeBob is jealous that Gary wants to spend time with Patrick.

Dumped Qualities

  1. This episode managed to make Gary and Patrick unlikable.
    • Gary disobeys SpongeBob's orders to return to him. Then at the end of the episode, for some reason, it is revealed that he only wanted to hang out with Patrick just to get a cookie in his pocket. This plot twist is...well...indolent on the writers' part.
      • With this said, this flanderized Gary's character by either making him into a selfish glutton or simple-minded pet with little to no awareness depending on how sentient you believe he is in this episode.
    • Patrick, however, is the most unlikable because when it was clear Gary wanted to be with him, Patrick shows SpongeBob no empathy and claims ownership of Gary, although SpongeBob has always been Gary's caretaker before the start of the series. As a good friend, Patrick should have tried to help SpongeBob and Gary reconcile instead of immediately claiming ownership of Gary just because he wants to spend time with him.
  2. The premise, as mentioned earlier, is generic and not that interesting. It's essentially based on the typical trope of one character being jealous of the other and trying unsuccessfully to overcome it.
  3. The pets that SpongeBob tried to replace Gary with are lame and are only in the episode for filler.
    • Rex promptly illustrates SpongeBob's statement about all the traits that make worms superior to snails by completely abandoning SpongeBob and hitching a ride on a bus.
    • Larry, whose name just indolently takes off from the first name of Larry the Lobster, has a bad temperament and even threatens SpongeBob by taking his bed.
    • Even the anatomically correct snail, Jerry, can't fill the hole in SpongeBob's heart.
  4. Patrick is still rude to SpongeBob at the end of the episode and tells him that Gary likes him better and that he has to get over it as he's only "hurting himself", even though SpongeBob was miserably heartbroken.
  5. Even the title card theme, while fitting, could turn people away from this episode because it sounds sad.
  6. This episode is also hated because of the twist with Gary only liking Patrick because of a cookie, it wasn't brought up or mentioned anywhere in the episode. Considering that he was on his stomach most of the scenes they're in, this foreshadowing was not seen more subtly.
  7. Patrick's Idiotic Fatprick personality was starting to make his presence known. This pattern would continue in other episodes like “I'm with Stupid” and all the way until Season 10, 15 years after this ScumBob of an episode premiered.

Undumped Qualities

  1. The first few minutes were good.
  2. It's at least heartwarming.
  3. The ending where Gary goes back to SpongeBob, despite having a very pointless twist is also good. Patrick also got what he deserved in the end too unlike "I'm with Stupid", except for the part where he finally learns the truth about Janet and Marty.
  4. Some funny moments and jokes:
    • “Gary? I thought what we had was special!”
    • “Heavy Du, Du, Du… (SpongeBob breaks down crying)"
    • "Who's a good boy? Who's a good boy? WHO'S A GOOD BOY?"
    • The "Jerry joke
    • "Blah blah blah" gag
  5. SpongeBob is still a likable character as usual.
  6. The title theme, despite sound depressing, is very unique and fitting.

Reception

Despite having an 8.7 rating on IMDb (mostly because its sister episode is among the most beloved episodes), this episode was hated by some fans of the series due to the unnecessary torture to SpongeBob, along with Patrick and Gary's cruelty towards SpongeBob.

Trivia

  • There was a creepypasta based on this episode called "SpongeBob Bootleg" and a Grimdark fanfic about the alternate version of the episode.
  • The episode was banned in Greece for reasons unknown. It never aired on Nickelodeon in Greece.
  • This episode inspired the Bootleg SpongeBob creepypasta.
  • The art for the characters was done by marker.
  • Some people think that this is the worst episode of the classic era, alongside with "I Was a Teenage Gary", "Krabby Land", "I'm with Stupid", "Party Pooper Pants" and "The Great Snail Race".
