Summary

SpongeBob decides to act more grown-up around his grandmother.

Qualities That Don't Deserve Grandma's Kisses

  1. For Grandma SquarePants' debut appearance, this is an eleven minute torture episode for SpongeBob, and the episode is average at best.
  2. Squidward and the Bikini Bottomies are unlikable in this episode, thanks and because of the fact that they tease SpongeBob since he got a kiss by his grandmother.
  3. Patrick is very inconsistently portrayed at best. On the one hand, he convinces SpongeBob that they have to be mature, while on the other hand, he later acts immaturely, making him a hypocrite.
  4. Plot hole: SpongeBob does not tell Grandma that the reason why he is acting like a man since Squidward and the Bikini Bottomies were making fun of him in the Krusty Krab.
  5. SpongeBob's emotional outburst at the end (before his grandmother calms him down) goes on for too long. It doesn't help that this also happens in later episodes like "Funny Pants", "All That Glitters", "Waiting" etc, just to name a few.
  6. Muddled message: Grandma SquarePants says what SpongeBob SquarePants said earlier in the episode, "You can kiss your grandma and still be an adult.", despite Squidward and the Bikini Bottomies making fun of him.
  7. SpongeBob then gets office supplies from Grandma even though he has never worked in a business community, as he has always worked as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab.
  8. Squidward and the Bikini Bottomites never get their comeuppance for laughing at SpongeBob.

Qualities That Deserves Grandma's Kisses

  1. As a debut character, Grandma SquarePants left a good first impression, and SpongeBob is still well-written.
  2. SpongeBob learns he doesn't have to act or be immature to get his grandma's love, which can be considered a life lesson.
  3. In "Squidville", Squidward does get his comeuppance, where SpongeBob and Patrick are playing with Reef Blowers, which is hilarious and one of the most memorable parts of the episode.
  4. The voice acting and animation are good as usual, much like any SpongeBob SquarePants episode.
  5. SpongeBob's outburst on not wanting to grow up can hit hard, especially viewers who grew up watching the show and now revisit this episode as an adult.
  6. The line "Now, you must acquire a taste for freeform jazz." is quite funny depending on your hearing, and it became a meme
    • The following quotes are also funny:
      • "Have I ever NOT been right?"
      • "OW! MY WIDDLE FINGER!"
