Billy Dilley's Super-Duper Subterranean Summer is a short-lived American animated television series created and executive-produced by Aaron Springer, an animation veteran whose extensive credits include working on Dexter's Laboratory, SpongeBob SquarePants, Samurai Jack, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Gravity Falls, Wander Over Yonder, and the current run of Mickey Mouse shorts. Springer was also behind the Cartoon Network pilots Periwinkle Around the World and Baloobaloob's Fun Park, and the Adult Swim pilot Korgoth of Barbaria. The series only lasted one season and aired on Disney XD from June 3 to June 15, 2017.

Plot

The show follows the adventures of Billy Dilley, a 7th grader who loves science, and his lab partners, Zeke and Marsha, and his pet rat, Anaximander, who on summer vacation find themselves trapped in Subterranea-Tania, a strange world located in the Earth's core after a test ride in Billy's science fair project The Cheeserator, a giant drilling machine designed for cutting holes in enormous Swiss cheese, goes horribly wrong.

Why It's Not Fascinating

  1. The series copies some aspects from Phineas and Ferb, another Disney XD show, as both shows follow the adventures of a boy that appears to be around 10 to 12 years old who loves science, his friends, and their pet as they go on strange and wacky adventures on summer vacation.
    • Funny enough that Billy Dilley and Phineas and Ferb were made by the same studio, Disney Television Animation.
  2. Overuse of toilet humor, which can be really disgusting.
  3. Terrible ending: In the final episode "The Battle for Subterranea-Tania", the characters don't return to Earth as Anaximander steals the Cheeserator to buy tacos, thus ending the show on a cliffhanger.
  4. The character designs look mediocre and ugly, especially with Billy and Anaximander.
    • Additionally, they are unfitting in a show made by Disney or Aaron Springer as they fit more into a French cartoon instead, despite the fact that Aaron Springer actually made the art style.
  5. The voice acting is abysmal, even from good actors such as James Arnold Taylor, who voiced Johnny Test, and Tom Kenny, who voiced the titular SpongeBob SquarePants, the Narrator from The Powerpuff Girls, Ice King from Adventure Time, and Woody from Brickleberry, among others, as Zeke McBongo.
  6. It can get a bit mean-spirited on a few occasions, especially with Billy, who gets little to no karma for his actions.
  7. Subterranea-Tania is a very generic name for a subterranean world.
  8. Some episodes can get either weird, disgusting, or disturbing.
  9. Tons of unlikeable characters, like Count Wretcher, Gumbrump, Zartan, and especially Billy himself, as stated above.
    • Billy himself is an extremely annoying protagonist, and he never shuts up.
    • The creatures, monsters, and Animaxander, Billy's pet rat, aren't good additions to the series either.
  10. Aaron Springer had to waste his talent on this.

Fascinating Qualities

  1. Surprisingly good and passable animation, considering the fact that it's animated by Rough Draft Korea.
  2. Despite the theme song repeating the main character’s name eight times, the music of it is nice to listen to. Heck even the ending music is nice to listen to.
  3. Good and sweet moments at times.
  4. The final episode, "The Battle for Subterranea-Tania" ended the series on an okay note, even though the ending was not good as stated above.
  5. Zeke McBongo, Judy, and Marsha Dwanelle at times are tolerable characters.
    • The Anti-Billy, Billy's evil alien clone that appears in the series finale, is a very impressive villain.
    • Billy did receive some decent character development in later episodes.
  6. Aaron Springer will redeem himself once he develops a new project at Warner Bros. Animation, despite the fact that it was cancelled.
  7. Some good episodes here and there, like "Calzones".

Reception

It has a score of 3.3/10 on IMDb. However, it was rated 3/5 stars on Common Sense Media by Emily Ashby, who said "This new world of Billy's appeals to kids' sense of imagination, even if it does so with more nonsense than anything else." She even stated how the show looks visually pleasing, boasts a talented voice cast, and how it's filled with nonstop action and laughs.

Trivia

  • This is one of Chris Reccardi's last works before his death.
  • Crew members who previously worked on SpongeBob SquarePants such as Casey Alexander, Zeus Cervas, Robertryan Cory Kenny Pittenger and even veteran writers Derek Drymon and Merriwether Williams worked on this show.
  • Like most of Disney cartoons, it was animated by Rough Draft Korea as mentioned in FQ#1.
  • Sarah Nicole-Robles, the voice actress of Judy, would later voice Luz from The Owl House.
