Bom Dia & Cia (also known as Bom Dia & Companhia) was a morning children's television block that aired on SBT and also was the children's TV program in more time on airing in Brazil being on air since August 2, 1993.
However, the block went downhill between 2015 and 2022 when Silvia Abravanel, the director of the block became the host of Bom Dia & Cia. The program was finally canceled on March 31, 2022, by Silvio Santos himself, with its last program aired on April 1, 2022, after 28 years. On June 29, 2023, was announced that the block would temporarily return from July 3 until July 28, 2023 (originally until July 31, 2023, but due to low ratings was anticipated to July 28), in the time of Brazilian school vacations.
Why It Was A Bad Day With A Company
- On July 14, 2015, the Brazilian justice banned Matheus Ueta and Ana Júlia Souza from hosting the block, alleging it was "child labor" and they were minors at the time. Because of this, Silvia Abravanel replaced them as the host of the block.[1]
- Silvia Abravanel's tenure as the host of Bom Dia & Cia is widely regarded as one of the most controversial in its history. Numerous incidents during her hosting stint, which target a young audience, have contributed to this negative reputation. For instance, during the July 18, 2018 episode, she was reported to have made threats to fire an air conditioning man named Lucas, and on the February 19, 2020, episode, she was involved in the on-air confrontation of three SBT employees. Surprisingly, despite these incidents causing concern, no appropriate actions were taken by SBT to address the situation caused by her behavior.
- Comparatively, previous hosts of the block, Jéssica Esteves, and Kauê Santin, who hosted from 2003 to 2005, may have faced criticism from viewers, but they never engaged in such conduct as Silvia did. These incidents highlight a significant difference in the approach to hosting the show and handling unforeseen situations.
- Despite the terrible hosts, this era was considered good because of the number of good shows it aired, sadly the same cannot be said about this one.
- Furthermore, Yudi Tamashiro, another former host of Bom Dia & Cia, has publicly spoken about the mistreatment he endured from Silvia during tapings, underscoring her problematic behavior and the impact it had on others.
- It's unfortunate that Silvia's decisions and actions had adverse effects on the programming of the block. Her refusal to air anime and Power Rangers[2] due to perceived violence can be seen as contradictory and may have alienated fans of those shows, contributing to their exclusion from the channel's lineup.
- Aired some bad/mediocre cartoons like Teen Titans Go!, the third season of Turbo F.A.S.T, the first season of the Ben 10 2016 reboot and The Powerpuff Girls (2016).
- The block also aired excessive reruns of shows like Masha and the Bear, Monster High, Ever After High, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse and the 2010s Polly Pocket web series, which are almost of them are considered good (or bad shows) by the audience. The reason why Masha and the Bear had excessive reruns is precisely because Silvia likes the cartoon and doesn't care about the public's opinion. While the cartoons based on Mattel dolls had excessive reruns were only to serve as advertising for Mattel dolls in Brazil and Mattel practically paid SBT for airing them.
- It also aired excessive reruns of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, Static Shock and X-Men: Evolution. Although these shows are not necessarily bad, they have been on the block since the first half of the 2000s! Because of this, a large part of the Brazilian kids today are not interested in watching either of these shows anymore, because they are already considered saturated and predictable for the channel. Silvia often ignored the other good Warner Bros. animated shows that have had few reruns on the block and focused only on those three shows returning.
- The segment Você no Bom Dia & Cia is very poorly unsalted since is to only shows the viewers' videos that are sent to SBT's website in the block and that's it. Even more is not comparable to a segment from the Jacky Petkovic era, when the viewers send their photos to the block and they also get a board game as a gift for appearing on the block, which is considered better than this segment from the Silvia Abravanel era.
- The block tried to air the Mexican sitcom El Chavo del Ocho inside the block itself on April 2, 2018, in an attempt by SBT to compete against the airing of El Chavo on Multishow, a channel owned by TV Globo's Canais Globo, but it failed in the ratings, obviously repeating the same episodes SBT has from the series when Multishow aired unaired episodes of the series that have never been aired in Brazil nor Mexico[3], although the ratings improved later[4], it wasn't enough to keep the series on the block, which caused El Chavo to be removed from the block one year later on August 2019 and got replaced by the Nickelodeon series The Thundermans, which did very well with the ratings in the block. El Chavo did return to BDC on July 29, 2020[5], but unfortunately due to the impasses between Televisa and Grupo Chespirito, the series and the other Chespirito shows stopped airing not only on SBT but also on Multishow, which was the last channel in Brazil to air the show.[6]
- They took off The Legend of Korra after airing for one month, which premiered in the block on July 22, 2015, that unfortunately didn't last long, as a result of the complaints from parents against the show and even sensationalism of Brazilian news websites, due to its ending when it was revealed that Korra and Asami are bisexual.
- The classic episodes of Tom & Jerry never aired on the block during this era, usually in favor of more recent versions of the franchise like Tom & Jerry Tales (which had excessive reruns on the block) and The Tom & Jerry Show from 2014, that although they are not necessarily bad, they do not have the same level of entertainment as the classic shorts. This also ended up breaking a channel tradition that used to have reruns of the classic Tom & Jerry since the channel's early years, this probably must have happened because Silvia started to consider the classic shorts to be outdated or very violent.
- If this wasn't enough the Brazilian justice had already banned Matheus Ueta and Ana Júlia Souza from hosting the block for being underaged, they also banned the block for using animals in the block's games in 2016, because according to them "they used animals for abusive situations and it's against its nature or exposes them in vexatious, painful or above their strength."[7]
- The 2017 redesgins of the Greens are bad, for replacing the old ones, and blatantly they rip off the characters of DreamWorks' Trolls (more specifically, the parts of the teeth and eyes).
- In 2018, after SBT finished the block Mundo Disney and their partnership with Disney, the program was extended returning with the cartoons Felix the Cat, Dennis the Menace (1986), Dennis and Gnasher (1996), and Popeye the Sailor, after Band lost the rights to the latter in the same year, all of them are considered classics of Bom Dia & Cia in its early years and that haven't aired on the channel for over a decade. However, these cartoons stayed on the air for a short time and were taken off of the block in less than a few months.
- On October 3, 2019, instead of airing Bom Dia & Cia at its time slot, 10:30 AM, SBT aired the notorious and infamous Spanish-language American show Alarma TV, at the time the show was airing on the network in 2019. Alarma TV was very controversial with SBT's viewers, due to the violent content it caused a lot of complaints from many parents who waited to watch the block with their children.[8]
- Silvia's entrance dressed as a butterfly at the beginning of the BDC carnival special on March 4, 2019, is pure embarrassment and also cringy.
- On March 5, 2020, an hour before the program went on the air, the part of the studio lights of the block where it was recorded ended up falling, as a result, the block ended up being aired only with the cartoons in that day. Fortunately, there was no one at the time of the accident and they didn’t get hurt.[9] As the block was recorded at Studio 6, infamously known for being supposedly haunted according to many people who were in the studio, it does not help to smooth things over.
- On December 8, 2020, during the game Decorando, Silvia was interacting with Miguel, who said pink was the first color to decorate, but she ignored his directions, fumbled, changed pink for purple and harmed him, making him lose the prize.[10]
- On March 30, 2022, one day before the announcement of the block's cancellation, after Pedro participated in one of the program's games, he asked Silvia Abravanel for a toy from Brazilian children's YouTuber Luccas Neto, whose toy was not on the program's roulette wheel, and his mom said that he didn't have Luccas Neto's toy in the program and the phone hung up, and decided for the child what his prize would be and spun the roulette hard, but used her hands to slow down and stop the spin, thus, it stopped at R$400.00. It ended up causing Silvia to be accused of cheating and harming him, who would have made more money if the roulette had continued to spin, despite Silvia apologizing for that on the last Bom Dia & Cia program on April 1, 2022, the program ended due to Silvia Abravanel's cheating on Pedro, which angered Silvio Santos, who ordered the program to be terminated as a result of Silvia's cheating. Not only Silvia Abravanel's manipulation of the program's roulette wheel was very wrong since Silvio Santos never manipulated the roulette wheels of his programs and was always strict with it, but what Silvia did with the program's roulette was not right and as a result, the block was cancelled no thanks to her.
- When the block temporarily returned for school vacations in July 2023, it was weak and while airing good shows like Totally Spies!, unfortunately, it also aired Teen Titans Go!. Not even Mônica's Gang (the only new show that premiered on BDC's temporary return) could save the block from the bad ratings, that have been caused by the time of 09:30 AM in the morning that BDC is aired.
- To add salt in the wound, the third segment from Cine Gibi 4 - Meninos e Meninas, Brincando de Boneca was censored on SBT's airing in BDC's temporary return, which they censored the word boys from boys' stories in a scene from the episode, which made SBT to be criticized for the censorship, although they denied for censoring the episode.[11]
Redeeming Qualities
- Aired good cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants, DC Super Hero Girls (2019), The 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, Dinotrux, the first two seasons of Turbo F.A.S.T, The Spectacular-Spider Man, Totally Spies!, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, the 2014 version of The Tom and Jerry Show, What's New Scooby-Doo?, Justice League Action, the first two seasons of El Chavo Animado and X-Men: Evolution. Mônica's Gang which premiered in BDC's July 2023 return is also good.
- Justice League and The Zeta Project at least have not had as many unnecessary reruns in these years as they used to have in previous years and they were finally able to retire from the block after several years of reruns.
- Matheus Ueta and Ana Júlia Souza returned to host the block on July 29, 2015, but unfortunately Silvia Abravanel returned to host the block on September 1, 2015. Matheus and Ana Júlia returned to host the block, but eventually two times in 2016 and 2017 when Silvia took a vacation.
- Despite Silvia being a huge jerk to the guests, the 2016 Children's Day special was honorable, to invite some of the former block's hosts like Jackeline Petkovic, Eliana and Chiquinho, Yudi Tamashiro and Priscilla Alcantara, Maisa, and Mara Maravilha to a special day.
- In the block's temporary return in July 2023, thankfully Silvia did not host the block at this time, presumably due to her manipulation of the program's roulette wheel in 2022, which resulted in the demise of BDC a year prior.
- The block was great from 1993 until July 14, 2015.
Reception
The block's downfall between 2015-2022, received negative criticism from both new and old viewers of the block, due to Silvia Abravanel hosting the block between 2015-2022, her terrible acts during the block, and the direction that the block became. Also, the block fell in the ratings, but it managed to have good ratings when Silvia Abravanel didn't host the block. The last host Silvia Abravanel also suffered criticism from the journalists according to them in their opinion, a host who is not very charismatic there (in addition to being adept at the irritating "facilitate" language) makes Bom Dia & Cia the worst children's program.[12] Various SBT employees, even children, and the former block's host Yudi Tamashiro hate her as well. Many of the viewers (both new and old) stopped to watch the block due to the reasons that the block had, making Bom Dia & Cia have low ratings on TV. After the end of Bom Dia & Cia, in the same year, Silvia returned to host Sábado Animado on April 30 of the same month.
On its temporary return in the July 2023 school vacaition, viewership remained low and lowered the ratings of SBT, which lost to RecordTV in the time that the return of the block is aired from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.[13]
Trivia
- The last show that aired in the BDC's final program on April 1, 2022, was The Spectacular Spider-Man, with Season 2 episode "Destructive Testing", while the final show that aired in the BDC's final program in its temporary comeback on July 28, 2023, was Iron Man: Armored Adventures.
- As a result of Bom Dia & Cia no longer making money for SBT, mainly with the children's publicity law in Brazil, it only had a few products related to the block's new look from 2017, two 2017 Green dolls made by Novabrink's Baby Brink and a perfume and a deo cologne made by Jequiti.
- Originally Mônica's Gang was going to premiere in the block's temporary return on July 10, but it was delayed to July 13, due to the controversy involving the actor from Mônica's Gang's live-action movies, Fernando Mais' fetish in poop and pee, although not being related to the franchise's animated series.[14]
- As mentioned before, originally the block's comeback was going to end on July 31, 2023, but due to low ratings, was anticipated to July 28.[15]
- Curiously, the block ended for the second and last time five days before the block's 30th anniversary on August 2, 2023.
