Bom Dia & Cia (also known as Bom Dia & Companhia or Good Morning & Co.) was a morning children's television block that aired on SBT and also was the children's TV program in more time on airing in Brazil being on air since August 2, 1993 to April 1, 2022, with a short-lived return on July 2023 during the school summer breaks.

It was known for its featuring several popular animated series such as Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and others often coming to rival other children's programs as TV Globinho and Band Kids. The block was once renamed as Eliana & Cia in April 1997 and premiered on May 12, 1997, due to Silvio Santos deciding to change the block's name, acording to him was important to evidence Eliana's name. It lasted until September 11, 1998, due to Eliana signing a contract with Record on September 17, 1998, to debut a month later Eliana e Alegria on October 12, 1998 on the channel.

This page will focus in the block's first years in 1993 until 2015.

Why It Was A Good Day With A Company

  1. It is one of the most memorable Brazilian children's blocks ever created in the history of Brazilian television, along with TV Globinho and many others and was the long-running Brazilian children's block on Brazilian television with 7500 episodes, since its premiere in 1993 until its end in 2022 and 2023.
  2. It aired a lot of good animated series, mainly during the 1993-2010 era when the channel had a variety of animated series from Disney, Warner Bros., DIC Entertainment, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Among the animated series that aired on the block in that period were: Tom and Jerry, Tom and Jerry Kids, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dennis the Menace, Dennis and Gnasher (1996), Rugrats (1991), Doug, Recess, Pepper Ann, 101 Dalmatians: The Series, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Goof Troop, Mickey Mouse Works, House of Mouse, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin: the Series, Hercules, The Legend of Tarzan, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Static Shock, X-Men: Evolution, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, ThunderCats, Bobby's World, Mega Man (Ruby-Spears), Care Bears, Sonic SatAM, The Pink Panther Show, Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, Tiny Toon Adventures, Taz-Mania, The Mask: Animated Series, Popeye the Sailor, Woody Woodpecker and The New Woody Woodpecker Show, Super Friends, Jabberjaw, Wacky Races, The Zeta Project, Krypto the Superdog and Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi.
  3. It also aired good sitcoms like That's So Raven and The Fresh Prince of Bel-air, although the latter is not for children and also the block did air the two sitcoms to compete with TV Globinho, which also aired sitcoms.
  4. It had a lot of well-known and great hosts that the block had during its history such as Eliana, Jackeline "Jacky" Petkovic, Yudi Tamashiro and Priscila Alcântara.
  5. The block was responsible for leveraging Eliana's success early in her career as a TV host, after Festolândia was canceled in 1992 due to budget problems. Eliana's success was so great that she was hired in 1998 by Rede Record to host Eliana & Alegria in 1998.
  6. The sets were very creative and well-made.
  7. Between 1993 until 2003, the block had special guest appearances by artists performing and giving interviews, notably having Angélica as a guest in the first episode in her first appearance together with Eliana.
  8. Catchy opening songs and incredible soundtrack composed by the hosts, most notably Eliana, with many of the songs being sold in physical media by LPs and CDs.
  9. The opening used between 2006-2009 is very creative showing several animated characters entering a house (being very similar to the Cartoon Network's City era bumpers).
  10. It had funny moments, coming from the block's former hosts, most notably Yudi who became an internet meme due to his PlayStation raps (since they were the most known prize among the public), being considered the most memorable part of the block during the late 2000s.
  11. The block also had their own support characters, which were also great:
    • The puppets Flitz, Melocoton, Recicléia and Bizuca who were present during the first years with Eliana until the first week with Jacky, with the exception of Melocoton which continued through the Jacky era and even evolved into a full-bodied puppet and also deriving toys.
    • The puppets Gugui, Piu, Pia and Ramonzinho during Jacky's last years in the show, most prominently in Gugui who served as a substitute for Melocoton.
    • Michelle Giudice, a child actress who co-hosted the show alongside Jacky having started appearing when she was just 3 years old. Currently she's a voice actress.
    • The late Seu José and his parakeet Chico who gave messages with kisses to viewers who participated in the games of the program who joined the block in 2012. Seu José left the block in 2015 before BDC's downfall starting in the same year.
  12. Starting on March 26, 2007, the block started to have good games to the viewers play in the block calling to the block's famous phone number and later virtually via Skype. The prizes that viewers win from the block's games were awesome, including video games, cell phones, computers, various toys and the famously known PlayStation.
  13. The 2005-2010 era (although there weren't many new cartoon debuts as in previous years) became very memorable among fans for the debut of new TV series like Naruto, the original Ben 10, Teen Titans, Winx Club and Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends.
  14. During these years with the success of Naruto, SBT tried to redeem itself with the anime fans debuting new anime (since the channel always ignored or sabotaged anime in the channel before that) debuting on the block One Piece (despite they aired the infamous 4Kids version) and Blue Dragon (unfortunately with a bad Brazilian dub done in Miami).

Bad Qualities

  1. Despite having good hosts throughout its history, it also had bad hosts that are not memorable like Jéssica Esteves and Kauê Santin and Bozo the Clown. In the case of Jéssica and Kauê, they are the most weakest hosts from the block's history, although fortunately the cartoons aired in the time saved the block for being a complete disaster from Jéssica and Kauê's hosting, in these later years, fans of the program started to accept their era wasn't very awful as they thought before, due of the airing of many great cartoons in that era and the only bad thing was their hosting in their era.
  2. It aired some bad animated series like Pink Panther and Sons, Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain, Bonkers, Sonic Underground, Pound Puppies (1986), My Gym Partner's a Monkey, Squirrel Boy, The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show, Teamo Supermo, season 9 of The Fairly OddParents and others.
  3. Before BDC's downfall in 2015, it had some bad hiccups:
    • In 2003, SBT faced a financial crisis that resulted in a decline in the program's budget with Jackeline having to host the block alone in a much smaller set until she was replaced at the end of 2003 by Jéssica and Kauê which retained the same set until the start of Yudi and Priscila's hosting stint in the block.
    • Some of the cartoons that the block aired had excessive reruns, with the most infamous example being X-Men: Evolution that since it debuted on the block in 2002 had NEVER left the block for more than a decade becoming one of the massive examples of the trope "Adored by the Network" in Brazil.
      • Justice League and The Zeta Project were also another examples of the trope used in the block.
    • Tom and Jerry also had excessive reruns on the channel during 2007-2010, as a way of trying to compete with Woody Woodpecker on Record. This got to the point where the show had ONE HOUR daily marathons!
    • What's New, Scooby Doo? also became a example of the trope "Adored by the Network", when it comes to the Scooby-Doo franchise as a whole with the previous series prior to this one having its reruns increasingly reduced and the later series receiving a bad treatment by SBT.
    • Bozo's cartoon had forced reruns in the block, as a promotion to Bozo's return in 2013. Along with Bozo's hosting in BDC, the reruns of Bozo's animated series were negatively received by viewers.
    • The 2012-2013 era (the post-Yudi and Priscila era), had a very confusing hosting stint after the firing of Yudi and Priscila in 2012 and 2013 by putting Bozo and Patati Patatá in the hosting of the block after the failure of Bozo's 2013 program and the cancellation of Carrossel Animado, due to low ratings, which caused having several hosts taking turns in the block's hosting each day (between clowns and children). However, due to negative reception, the clowns had to be removed in the same year.
  4. Naruto's broadcast in BDC was very controversial, mainly because the anime was the most aggressive and mature series to have aired on the block which caused the indicative rating of BDC to be changed to 10, even with Maisa (one of the hosts) at the time being less than 10 years old. Naruto also never aired fully as a result and ended up leaving the block in 2010.
    • When the second season of Naruto debuted, there were some poorly-made censorship like there was an attempt to digitally remove Asuma's cigarette, but the censorship was very evident, because it can still be noticed the silhouette of the cigarette appearing, despite the fact that the cigarette appeared normally when the first season aired on SBT.
  5. Due to SBT being fined 1 million reais for placing merchandising and board games on BDC's roulette wheels in 2011[1], in 2013 the prizes that were given to viewers that used to be several different types of toys were reduced to just money (ranging between 200-1000 reais), with three exceptions being tablets, video games and laptops (all three being unknown the brands and types).
  6. The block went downhill on July 15, 2015 until the program's end in 2022 and 2023, when the Brazilian justice banned Matheus Ueta and Ana Júlia Souza from hosting the block and the director of the block, Silvia Abravanel replacing them as the block's host, which caused a very bad image to BDC, due to her controversies towards the block's crew and the children who participated in the block's games.

Reception

The block's first years were well-received by long-time viewers, mainly because of the hosts and also for airing many cartoons and series that become very-known in Brazil thanks to the block.

However before its downfall in 2015-2023, the block wasn't safe from receiving negative criticism, which was criticized for the saturated reruns of shows like Static Shock, X-Men: Evolution, What's New, Scooby-Doo? and others, that put the block on the list of The Worst Programs of 2011 by UOL.[2]
