Ed, Edd n Eddy is a Canadian-American animated television series that aired on Cartoon Network from 1999 to 2009 created by Danny Antonucci. The series was considered the longest-running original Cartoon Network series, which the show lasted for 10 years.
Plot
The show revolves around three preteen boys who all share similar names. They do not get any allowance from their parents so they can't buy Jawbreakers, their favorite candy. Because of that, they spend most of their time coming up with scams to get money from their neighbors, which in turn makes them the most unpopular kids in town.
Why They're Well-Behaved Kids & Also Deserves Jawbreakers
- The animation is completely fluid and smooth, thanks to Yeson Entertainment and Funbag Animation Studios Inc.
- The boiling line effect applied to the characters' outlines is a unique touch. In fact, according to the creator, this was done to make the show stand out more from other cartoons at the time.
- In addition, this style would later inspire other shows to experiment with this formula, especially Space Chickens in Space.
- The boiling line effect applied to the characters' outlines is a unique touch. In fact, according to the creator, this was done to make the show stand out more from other cartoons at the time.
- Eye-popping color scheme that resembles candy.
- Great character designs that got improved magnificently from the second season onward.
- Catchy instrumental theme song.
- Charming characters, especially the titular trio of Ed, Edd and Eddy.
- Memorable characters (good or bad) like the aforementioned Eds, Sarah, Jimmy, Nazz, Kevin, Rolf and his animals, Johnny 2x4 and Plank, and the Kanker Sisters.
- Effective and frequent use of jazz instruments that fits the show.
- It mirrors the realistic problems that preteens go through while growing up.
- It provides valuable lessons such as the dangers of fraud.
- The voice acting is very good.
- Tons of funny moments that make it physically impossible to watch without laughing or even chuckle!
- Amazing use of slapstick, especially with human characters.
- Many quotable and funny lines, especially from the lovable Ed.
- The music video "My Best Friend, Plank" is heartwarming.
- The show is a great homage to The Three Stooges and the Golden Age of Animation at the same time, most likely with how the titular trio are gods of durability.
- The grand finale, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show, is an amazing conclusion to the series.
- It is currently the longest-running original series on Cartoon Network right next to Teen Titans Go! running for almost 11 years.
- While Season 6 had only two episodes, this is understandable because the show's crew had to work on the movie and a.k.a. Cartoon didn't have a big staff and budget to make a whole season and a movie concurrently.
- Memorable and hilarious episodes, such as:
- "The Ed Touchables" (which started the series off and season 1 on a high note)
- "Tag Yer Ed"
- "Urban Ed"
- "Scrambled Ed"
- "Virt-Ed-Go"
- "Knock, Knock, Who's Ed?"
- "A Case of Ed"
- "An Ed is Born"
- "One + One = Ed"
- "Ed-n-Seek"
- "Who, What, Where, Ed!"
- "Avast Ye Eds"
- "Honor Thy Ed"
- "Mirror Mirror on the Ed"
- "Wish You Were Ed" (which kicked off Season 3 in a positive manner)
- "Little Ed Blue" (one of the best episodes in the series)
- "Every Which Way But Ed" (also counts as one of the best episodes of the series)
- "Boom Boom Out Goes The Ed"
- "Truth or Ed"
- "This Won't Hurt an Ed"
- "Cool Hand Ed"
- "All Eds Are Off"
- "May I Have This Ed?" (where it gave season 6 a good first impression)
- It spawned four memorable specials such as, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Jingle Jingle Jangle, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Hanky Panky Hullabaloo, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Boo Haw-Haw!, and The Eds are Coming, the Eds are Coming.
- It's tie-in game released in 2005: Ed, Edd n Eddy: The Mis-Edventures is great. (They also had Jawbreakers! in 2002 for GBA, which was pretty mediocre, though)
Dorky Qualities
- The last two seasons while not bad seasons and still good, are considered to be the weakest out of all, for different reasons:
- Overuse of exaggerated, surreal sound effects that often come out of nowhere.
- Flanderization of several characters: Ed went from a naïve, but funny idiot to an incompetent, know-nothing donkey; Edd went from an innocent and intellectual kid to a goody-two-shoes who complains about everything that's remotely wrong; and Eddy becoming a terrible, insufferable, selfish maniac who doesn't care about anyone.
- The Eds are treated like Butt-Monkeys in these seasons, even more so than in seasons 1-4.
- The show can get really mean-spirited when it doesn't focus on scams and instead focusing on giving the Eds very unfair treatment in a forced attempt to further submit them to their already-established "Butt Monkey" status than usual, making the dynamic between them and the other kids not well handled.
- There are a handful of bad/mediocre episodes, such as
- "Nagged To Ed" (which started this series on a bad note)
- "Sir-Ed-A-Lot"
- "My Fair Ed"
- "If it Smells Like an Ed" (arguably the worst, most infamous episode in the series)
- "Ed in a Half Shell"
- "Sorry, Wrong Ed"
- "Your Ed Here"
- "To Sir with Ed"
- "Momma's Little Ed"
- "Stop, Look and Ed"
- "Run for Your Ed"
- "Hand Me Down Ed"
- "Thick as an Ed"
- "Cleanliness Is Next to Edness"
- "A Fistful of Ed" (which ended Season 5 on a weak note)
- "Tinker Ed" (the second worst in the series)
- "The Good, The Bad, and the Ed"
- "Smile for the Ed"
- "No Speak Da Ed"
- "Look Before You Ed" (which ended the TV series and Season 6 on a sour note)
- The sixth "season" only has two episodes (or one if counting both segments) which is disappointing. With just two episodes, calling the sixth season "a season" doesn't sound too convincing. Though it can be excused by WTWBK&ADJ#18 above due to the development of Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show.
- Just like Earthworm Jim: The Animated Series, the dialogue can be too fast-paced or incoherent to hear at times, sometimes enough to the point when you can't hear what some characters are saying (e.g., some of Rolf's dialogue involves him speaking so fast to the point where some viewers can't comprehend what he's saying at times).
- Some inappropriate moments such as:
- Implied rape jokes involving the Kanker Sisters, which are extremely inappropriate for a kids' show.
- Some of the title cards can look uncanny and sometimes inappropriate.
- Partial nudity in some episodes.
- The AKA Cartoon logo (see BQ#9).
- Some gross-out humor, particularly involving Ed's poor hygiene (with "Thick as an Ed" being the worst offender).
- Some of the episodes have some pretty bad morals, with "Stop, Look and Ed" being a notable example.
- The AKA Cartoon logo at the end of an episode is too graphic and creepy for a children's show and (it features a troll getting impaled with a pencil with a very creepy face, with a long tongue and an eyeball popping out, and creepy song playing in the background).
- The Halloween special variant is even more disturbing because it has actual blood with black background.
- In fact, on earlier versions used on The Brothers Grunt, he had visible testicles, which were thankfully removed in this show.
- The Halloween special variant is even more disturbing because it has actual blood with black background.
- Some of the characters are unlikable at times such as Sarah, Jimmy, Kevin, and the Kanker Sisters.
- The show never translated to HD Widescreen until the final season which had only two episodes.
- The episode "A Town Called Ed" has a continuity error. It is revealed that the Kanker sisters' ancestor, Lord Kanker, beat Eddy's ancestors in a poker game over the land and founded Peach Creek and the Kanker sisters themselves own Peach Creek, despite their debut appearance episode "Nagged to Ed" establishing that they're not from Peach Creek. If they have a family member who founded Peach Creek and owned the area, then how come nobody in Peach Creek is aware and knows about that? Especially if their hometown is owned by a trio of mean, female bullies who stalk, sexually harass (in the Eds' case), bully, and torment people on a regular daily basis?
Reception
Ed, Edd n Eddy received an overwhelming number of positive reviews from critics and fans. The first season holds the highest rating of all four seasons, it got a 7.8/10, the second season got a 7.7/10, the third season 7.6/10, and the fourth season which got a 7/10, totaling up to a final rating of 7.4/10 on IMDb. While the last two seasons received mixed.
Trivia
- The character of Rolf was loosely based on the show's creator, Danny Antonucci.
- Rolf's pet pig Wilfred is named after Shawn Wilfrid Godin, a close friend of the production crew who passed away suddenly in 2001.
- Paul Boyd, who animated the title sequence, was shot and killed by a police officer in 2007.
- The show is often referred to as "The Three Stooges of Animation".
- The plot of the Season 4 episode Here's Mud in Your Ed was inspired by an idea from Kit Topp, the creator of a popular Ed, Edd n Eddy fansite.
- Danny Antonucci was good friends with the creator behind The Ren & Stimpy Show, John Kricfalusi.
- Only the first two seasons are available on DVD. While the Season 2 DVD and the DVD volumes are still being manufactured and still cheap, the Season 1 DVD went out of print and is now expensive.
- It was the longest-running Cartoon Network original show, lasting for 10 years, 10 months, and 4 days, until being overtaken by Teen Titans Go! by 2023.
- Animation companies Yeson Entertainment and Funbag Animation Studios Inc. did the animation for this show.
- Season 1 was actually produced from 1997-1998.
- The show briefly returned to Boomerang in 2018.
- The show was originally pitched to Nickelodeon.
- Due to minor post-production delays, Cartoon Network moved the premiere of this cartoon. The show debuted on Monday, January 4, 1999, pushed further from its original November 1998 launch date.
- According to YouTube, Japan doesn't like Ed Edd 'n Eddy very much, likely due to the show's disregard for authority, or rather the complete lacking of an authority whatsoever, with none of the minimalist cast being over the age of 18, which strongly clashes the aforementioned Japanese ideals of authority figures (considering the fact that there are absolutely no adults among the kid cast), and the show's grotesque art style coming off as bizarre to Japanese audiences.
- The show is really popular in Scandinavia, still frequently airing the reruns on CN and absolutely everything the show has made is dubbed. To boot, it's pretty hard to find a person there who doesn't at least know what the show is.
- In June 2007, a.k.a. Cartoon confirmed they were working on a 90-minute television film, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show, which was originally planned to broadcast in 2008, along with a DVD release. As a result, the film's production replaced that of the previously-ordered sixth season of the series, not because of a lack of interest in new episodes, but rather because the entire a.k.a. staff was occupied with the making of the film. Cartoon Network agreed to Antonucci's decision to make a film rather than the sixth season. Two sixth-season episodes were already in production, though, so Cartoon Network aired them as part of a special event on June 29, 2008. IGN confirmed that the series was on hiatus due to the film in November 2007. Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show eventually aired on November 8, 2009, officially ending the series.
- Season 5 was the only season of the series (along with the specials and movie) where adults (such as Ed's mom and Eddy's parents) and other people besides the main cast do make appearances, albeit only briefly and only as arms, shadows, silhouettes, pictures, etc.
- The show was originally going to end in the season 4 finale "Take This Ed and Shove It", however, it continued for one more season in 2005 after 11 months, "A Fistful of Ed" was also originally going to be the series finale but once again continued for one last season and 2 more episodes in June 29, 2008, a year later the movie titled "Big Picture Show" came out, which serves as the grand finale for the series.
- Ed, Edd n Eddy was created and produced in Canada, a country with ten provinces and three territories, as A. K. A. Cartoon's headquarters is Vancouver. Most of the voice actors on the show are Canadian. Additionally, the show has several references to Canada and its people, the Canadians. Despite its Canadian origins, Ed, Edd n Eddy is still considered an American animated series because it is original to Cartoon Network, an American network, and is primarily aimed at an American audience. Although many fans believe that Ed, Edd n Eddy is set in Canada, some elements, such as the Eds' non-self-referential jokes about Canadians, suggest otherwise.
- Erin Fitzgerald the actor, didn't appear in the third season.
- The older wiki Terrible TV Shows & Episodes stated that the last two seasons were bad, however, as these seasons have had mixed reception, some people liking these seasons too and people generally say they love the show in general, these seasons are now featured as good media.
- Season 6 is the only season of the series to be translated to HD Widescreen.
- Likewise, the Big Picture Show film was also broadcasted in HD Widescreen.
- The sound effects in this show (especially for last two seasons) later become popular meme in 2018.
