"If it Smells Like an Ed" is the twelfth episode of the third season of Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Summary

The Eds are framed for ruining Friendship Day for the kids, so it's up to them to find the real culprit and clear their names.

Why It Smells Like Garbage

1. Much like the Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends episode, "Everyone Knows It's Bendy", the Pokémon episode, "Grass Hysteria!", and this series' fifth season episode "Tinker Ed", the main characters are accused of something they didn't do. And much like those episodes, nobody really wants to see characters that they like so much suffering because of something they didn't really do, maybe except for characters that can be unlikable like Bloo and Eddy.
2. This episode has an extremely mean-spirited tone as all three Eds get blamed and punished for things they didn't do all because Eddy gave Jimmy a humiliating wedgie.
   • It counts as a harsh Eds torture episode, especially for Ed and Double D who were innocent aside from laughing at Jimmy's wedgie along with the other cul-de-sac kids (except Sarah).
   • The Eds tried to show off evidence that they didn't do but imminently ended up running away from the threatening cul-de-sac kids.
   • The Eds never get their names cleared.
   • Nobody (maybe except Jimmy) gets out of the Karma Houdini party for what they did to the Eds.
3. The cul-de-sac kids are extremely stupid, obnoxious, hypocritical, hostile, and unlikable (mostly Kevin, Sarah, and especially Jimmy). They blame the Eds for stealing a paintbrush, wiping Plank's mouth off with a rag, and shoving a hockey stick into their paper mache heart, although they really don't have much evidence to prove the Eds are guilty (and in Ed's case, no evidence), especially since it would have been impossible for the Eds to do since it's incredibly unlikely that the kids would have never have caught them on the acts, and they just immediately jump to conclusions without really good thought, especially when they thought the Eds tied up Jonny for a candy scam.
4. This episode tries way too hard to make it look like Rolf is the culprit when there is hardly any motive for him to frame the Eds.
5. Jimmy openly reveals he's the culprit behind the acts since he wanted to get back at the Eds for what Eddy did. Normally this would be justified if Jimmy was only targeting Eddy, but he also targeted Ed and Double D despite those two doing absolutely nothing wrong throughout the episode. Although Double D and Ed laughed at him, the other kids (minus Sarah) laughed at Jimmy too, but he didn't get revenge on the other kids by framing them.
   • It's possible that Jimmy knew he would fail if he framed the other kids since Sarah would be the only one finding evidence to prove the Eds and the other kids to be innocent.
6. Sarah yells at Ed and says that she is telling Mom after Eddy gave Jimmy the wedgie, even though Ed did nothing wrong except laugh at Jimmy along with the others.
7. Jimmy hardly gets punished for his unjustified actions, except for slipping on a banana peel, which is pretty pathetic.
8. The opening cutscene of the kids getting ready to start Friendship Day tricks the viewers/fans into thinking it will be a cute, harmless episode.
9. Unexplained plot holes: How did the paintbrush not stain Jimmy's shirt if he puts it under his shirt?
   • And while we're at it, why did Sarah just randomly accuse Ed of stealing her paintbrush?
   • And how did Plank manage to get his mouth back in a scene where the cul-de-sac kids pelt the Eds with fruits at the end of the episode?
10. The episode already gave away that Jimmy was the culprit before it was revealed in the end:
    • After Jimmy was given the wedgie, the Eds really had done nothing wrong to the other kids, other than Eddy taking one of Rolf's jujubes.
    • After he says this line "Hooligans!", he ends it with a happy look on his face.
    • When the kids walked away from the Eds, at the viewpoint where Eddy yelled at the kids that they have to trust them, Jimmy was nowhere to be seen.
    • Jimmy was the only one who talked in the scene where the Eds were trying to research the kid's shoes to find the culprit.
    • When the angry cul-de-sac kids were chasing the Eds, Jimmy said "Make 'em cry, Kevin! Do it!", which clearly shows that Jimmy was the culprit.
11. Jonny could have told the other kids what really happened instead of quickly blaming the Eds and bullying them, because:
    • While Jonny was shown tied-up, blindfolded, and coated with candy, if you look very closely, you can see that his ears are clearly exposed, meaning that he should've heard the Eds and noticed their innocence.
    • During the flashback scene where Jimmy tells the Eds why and how he framed them, Jimmy lures Jonny with an acorn, captures him through a wagon while the latter is being distracted, and then the scene cuts to Jimmy gluing candy to an already tied up and blindfolded Jonny. So how Jimmy tied Jonny up and blindfolded him without any notice of him in the first place is unknown.
    • Plank is the only witness, because despite having his mouth erased by Jimmy, he still has eyes and, as Jonny says about him in "Vert-Ed-Go", sees things and he should've told Jonny what really happened and Jonny should've understood him, thus clearing the Eds names.
12. Jimmy also sabotaged his friends in this episode in order to frame the Eds:
    • He stole his best friend, Sarah's paintbrush.
    • He tied up Jonny into jujubes.
    • He wiped Plank's mouth off.
    • He used Rolf as a pasty.
    • He also used Kevin and Nazz a little bit to get the Eds tormented and humiliated.
13. The infamous "Don't mess with the best, suckas!" line from Jimmy. This proves that he's very egotistical.
14. The Kanker Sisters (who have a seriously creepy crush on the Eds) weren't aware that Jimmy was getting revenge on the Eds, unlike when they were aware of Kevin, Nazz, Jonny, and Rolf planning to beat the Eds up in the movie, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show.
15. Nazz is out of character in this episode. She didn't laugh at Jimmy's misfortune in "Boys Will Be Eds", but she laughs at Jimmy's misfortune in this episode, which makes her look like a hypocrite.
    • Also the scene where she (incorrectly) scolds the Eds and shames them for blaming the crimes on Kevin, even though it was only Eddy who did it, while Kevin gives them an evil smile during it. Talk about cruel irony and hypocrisy!
16. Terrible Ending: After the Eds get fruit-pelted and humiliated by the angry cul-de-sac kids for crimes they didn't do, Jimmy reveals to them that he, with the Kanker sisters' assistance, was the culprit behind the acts while all the other cul-de-sac kids left unnoticed. Then, through a finger snap, Jimmy bribes the Kanker sisters the Eds as a reward for helping him frame the boys, and the Eds, screaming in terror, get taken away by the Kankers to presumably get kissed and harassed, while Jimmy (minus slipping on a banana peel) gets off scot-free.
    • What makes this ending even worse is that not only do the cul-de-sac kids never find out that Jimmy was the culprit, nor do the Eds get their names cleared, All of this pretty much makes the ending feel like a cliffhanger that never got resolved.

Redeeming Qualities

1. The friendship song at the beginning is kind of heartwarming.
2. The slapstick in this episode can be still hilarious, such as when Ed accidentally dropped the concrete slab on his feet.
3. Jimmy's revenge plan was pretty clever. Heck, not even Sarah is smart enough to think of a plan like that as she would just beat the Eds up.
4. Despite being in the wrong for telling Ed to their mother, it was sweet of Sarah to not laugh at Jimmy and she even tries to defend him.
5. Although Jimmy slipping on a banana peel was pathetic, seeing him getting karma at the very end of the episode is at least somewhat satisfying and justified.
6. To be fair, anyone would feel sad if they were publicly humiliated. So Jimmy's situation is very understandable.
7. If going by continuity, in later episodes, none of the cul-de-sac kids seems to be bitter about what happened in this episode, and even Jimmy doesn't seem to be mad at the Eds either, so it is very possible that the Eds got their names cleared off-screen.

Trivia

• Despite being the most hated episode in the series, this episode, for some reason, is one of Danny Antonucci's favorite Ed, Edd n Eddy episodes when asked in an interview.
• The friendship song is sung again by the characters at the end of Ed, Edd n' Eddy's Big Picture Show.
