Bomberman 64: The Second Attack! (爆ボンバーマン2, Baku Bonbāman 2, (Explosive Bomberman 2) is an Action Video game created for the N64, and was released on the N64 on December 3, 1999 in Japan while it was relased in North America on May 28, 2000. It is both the sequel to 1997's Bomberman 64 and standalone sequel to 1998's Bomberman Hero and is overall the third Bomberman game released on the N64. It expands over its predecessor in almost every possible way, adding a deeper storyline, better graphics, more involved levels and bosses, many types of elemental bombs, a playable companion character, and light RPG elements. Perhaps owing to its status as a late release for the Nintendo 64, it wasn't released in Europe. However, it would not be the final Bomberman game for the system.
Plot
Bomberman is flying through space when his ship detects a black hole. During his panic, Bomberman is knocked out and his ship is pulled into the black hole. He later awakens in a prison cell along with an egg that he had previously discovered on a hot springs planet. The egg hatches and Pommy appears, who slips through the bars and gets the fire stone back for Bomberman... Using his bombs, he destroys the door and the two escape, beginning their adventure to defeat the BHB Army and escape from the black hole.
Why It's Escape from the Black Hole
- The graphics are very good, even for a Nintendo 64 game released in 1999. While the Bomberman design doesn't look as perfect as Bomberman Hero, his design is still nicely done and looks more realistic in some way. It's also a step up from the first Bomberman 64 game. The environments also look realistic in a good way and look very good. The graphics are so good for the time that they look more advanced than most Nintendo 64 games, along with Doraemon 3: Nobita no Machi SOS!.
- The storylines are deeper and darker than any of the other Bomberman games, and they work very well with the Bomberman universe. The bomberman, with his ship, is pulled by a black hole and imprisoned by the BHB army. Bomberman and Pommy need to defeat them. While the game is darker than other Bomberman games, it's also got some funny and hilarious moments, and these moments are at their best here. The story is also a step up from the first Bomberman 64, despite the first one having a decent story too. Due to that, Bomberman Hero and this game are considered to have the darkest story of most Bomberman games ever. It's also considered to be the best story of any Bomberman games.
- In particular, after Luciferus, a key character in this game, laughs out loud, you must see his murmur , ``Talking to oneself, laughing to oneself...it's quite...vain... .
- Also, Bomberman, who previously had only narration-like lines, now speaks lines of his own. In his previous works, he only used shouts, but it was refreshing to see him speak in subtitles. Some of them will make you laugh if you remember the main story.
- The appearance of the popular character "Regulus" from the previous work. He fights as the last (or sixth) assassin of the Seven Elemental Knights, and like the previous work, he fights together at the very end this time as well.
- However, it's just a matter of sharing your power. The person in question is erased by Luciferus, the mastermind . It's up to the player to decide if he can survive.
- The controls are very good, responsive, and tight at the same time; they are even flawless. They are also extremely improved from the first Bomberman 64, when in that one they were stiff. These can be easily picked up in less than two minutes due to how simple and good they are.
- Some funny, hilarious, and even memorable moments in the game include:
- The one when Pommy said that Pommy sounded better than Bomberman, and that made Bomberman angry, though Pommy can be seen as unlikable in that moment.
- Also, when Pommy said that he knew the reason why Bomberman didn't want to go in the dirty water, he thought (or it's possibly true) that Bomberman couldn't swim and was chocked.
- There is another one when Pommy mocks Bomberman because he can't swim and makes Bomberman really angry.
- Or in the credits, Bomberman says to Pommy (it's the only moment where he has some lines in the game) that he wants to play too. but they have a job first, or when they are in a volcano, Pommy says that it's too hot, and Bomberman forces him to go, and when Pommy says he doesn't want that, that makes Bomberman very angry (though that moment is depending on the players because some could find Bomberman in that moment unlikable).
- The soundtrack is catchy and awesome, like the Boss Fight theme or the Alcatraz music in the first world of the game. The true final boss theme is a masterpiece too, and that makes the game sound like other awesome Nintendo 64 games, like Paper Mario, it's also fit most of the levels.
- There's a lot of replay values in this game, being almost better than the replay values of Bomberman Hero.
- However, you will mostly only collect custom parts and guardian suits. However, all custom parts are extremely difficult to obtain and require various techniques.
- As a rescue measure, the Guardian Suit appears. You can obtain them in the following order: Boots → Hands → Body → Head. The effect is equipment that increases special abilities and stun resistance from the beginning . If you collect them all, you can even use the remote control. However, even with this equipment, you can't use the remote control for the bosses and gravity control devices listed below, so it's just a relief. However, the advantage of not having to retake special items every time is huge.
- Pommy also evolves by collecting specific items and supports Bomberman.
- Speaking of the soundtrack, there's plenty of song in this game, there's at least 60 songs in the entire game! Which is impressive for a 1999 Nintendo 64 game, and not that much games on this platform have this lot of songs.
- This game introduces some likable new characters, such as:
- Pommy, which is cute, and it's also the only game where he fully speaks; he also helps Bomberman in his adventure, and he can evolve by collecting foods, although his persona was downgraded in the next games where he appeared, such as Bomberman Generation, where he no longer spoke.
- Mihaele, who sometimes helps Bomberman in his adventure and goes to see both Bomberman and Pommy.
- The new villain, Sthertoth, is an awesome villain and is probably one of, if not the most menacing villain in any of the Bomberman games, where he has pieged Bomberman and Pommy when Sthertoth used the knights to stop Bomberman and Pommy and for them to collect the electromagnetic stones, in fact, he can even been considered to be the best villain in any Bomberman games, he even on par with villain like Dr. Eggman from the Sonic serie.
- His boss fights are also epic and are even on par with Sonic Adventure with it's epicness, see (WIEFTBH #11).
- His design is also fantastic and enjoyable, even if it's might not be one of the most menacing design.
- There is now a shop for buying items or parts of the armor and extra health points. Not only is that nice, but it's also a first for a Bomberman game.
- The most notable exemple is the armor part for Bomberman which give him a bit more power and it's quite useful thought the game.
- You can buy extra parts of health merchandise for making the game easier and having more health to play through the game, and it's useful for the boss fight. It's also a good thing due to how hard the game can be sometimes.
- The boss fights are fun and great; they are very well designed, and they are possibly the best boss fights in any Bomberman game. They are also very challenging and have good design for most parts. They are also more fun than the first Bomberman 64 because, as said in WIEFTBH#3, the controls are tighter and the boss fights are less unfair for most parts.
- Speaking of the bosses, the final boss is epic, just like Sonic Adventure, and it's also taking place in space, which makes everything even better. His boss fight is also very challenging and fun, even if it's hard.
- The environments are awesome looking, especially the one where you fight the final boss or the last area; they feel fresh and original and not a rip-off of any games like Mario or Mega Man X, for example.
- If you die three times, you can continue with the power-up you have collected, which is a first for a Bomberman game, and it's one of the few games in the franchise to do that (even though it's not in the Japanese version, unfortunately).
- All the endings are very good.
- In the good ending, the angel deems the universe too corrupt and wants to destroy it and create a new one. The bomberman resolves to stop it. Afterwards, the angel decides that the universe is safe with a hero like Bomberman and releases Lilith and Rukifellth from their trances.
- The normal ending is decent too, though not as great as the good ending. After the battle, Bomberman defeats the demon. Rukifellth and Lilith are once again their normal selves. However, the God of Chaos reappears, taking Rukifellth with him. He begins to destroy the warship Noah.
- Unlike the First Two Bomberman games on the Nintendo 64: In comparison to other Nintendo 64 Bomberman games, getting the good ending and 100% is not as difficult; for the good ending, you simply need to beat all seven planets without getting the instant kill.
- The game is longer than the First and Two Bomberman games on the Nintendo 64; this game has 6 to 9 hours of gameplay compared to Bomberman 64 and Bomberman Hero, which have 4 to 5 hours of gameplay.
- The North American version adds a tutorial mode, and the pause screen has more details than the Japanese version.
- There are a lot of modes for the multiplayer game mode, which are:
- The usual Bomberman. The person who survives until the end wins.
- The battle is almost the same as Bakubon 1, including the ability to use ghosts.
- battle royale
- Time system. The person who earns the most points wins.
- At first, everyone starts with 100 points, and each time you defeat them, you get 10 points. On the other hand, if you are defeated by someone else, you will only lose 5 points, but if you self-destruct, you will lose 15 points, so avoid this at all costs.
- king & knights
- Team battle. Teams share their health, and the team that reduces the other team's health to 0 or has the most health when time runs out wins.
- One stationary NPC "King" will be placed on each team. The characters you control dress up as "knights" and destroy the opponent's king or protect your own king.
- Knights have -1 health even if they are defeated, but kings have -3 health when they are attacked. Very big.
- Gloves are always equipped and will not drop even if you get killed.
- Kings can be carried like bombs and items. You can send your own king into a safe zone or throw your opponent's king into the flames.
- key trial
- A battle for three golden keys hidden in the field. The first person to capture two keys wins.
- The key emits a tremendous amount of light when it appears, so it's hard to miss. On the other hand, it is unlikely that someone else will miss the moment you captured it. Also, no information about who has the key will be made public.
- In a sense, this is natural, but if you are killed by a bomb while holding the key, you will drop the key.
- The key point is that instead of the previous one-screen system, there are four screens divided for each player. If your opponent is someone who knows the field, you may be hit with a bomb from a place you can't see.
- score attack
- Collect money by destroying obstacles and defeating animals that appear in the field. The person who earns the most wins.
- You can go steady, but the defeated opponent will scatter 20% of the money they have, so it's good to earn money quickly in battle.
- This is also a 4-screen system.
- As a side note, perhaps because this mode ultimately does not require battles, players are separated from each other, and a new map can be used where it is physically impossible to battle.
- There are many types of elemental bombs:
- As the story progresses, the elemental bombs are added to Bomberman's bombs. The number of bombs increases by obtaining ``elementals, which are the basis of the story.
- In addition to the damage mentioned above, each bomb has a special effect. It requires the ability to understand the characteristics of various bombs and apply the skills to break through the gimmicks, but this also adds to the high level of difficulty (at least in the japanese version).
- The maximum number of bombs that can be placed varies depending on the type.
- 4 pieces for fire/lightning, 3 pieces for ice/wind, 1 piece for earth/light/dark.
- The three types that fall under the above-mentioned ``Fire Up will increase the explosion time are Earth, Light, and Dark.
- Fire Bomb
- Flamming bomb. The usual. The blast is cross-shaped.
- If the blast hits a wall in a way that is not perpendicular to it, it curves along the wall without interruption. When detonated in the air, the tip of the explosion is slightly affected by gravity, resulting in a dome-shaped flame falling.
- Flamming bomb. The usual. The blast is cross-shaped.
- Ice Bomb
- ice bomb. The blast is circular. It has a wide attack range and is easy to use, but it also has height as well as range, so it is easy to hit enemies in high positions.
- When dropped into water or lava, it can create an ice foothold at that point for a certain period of time. You can also use it to cross water and lava.
- There are many scenes where you can advance using this, but since Bomberman cannot swim, if you fail to build a scaffold, you will die instantly, and the scaffold that is created is not that big, and even if you are far away from the scaffold, if the firepower is high, you will be caught in the blast . Some people die mid-way because they can't stand it anymore.
- However, if the firepower is low, the attack range is surprisingly narrow, so you need to be careful whether you use it for movement or attack.
- ice bomb. The blast is circular. It has a wide attack range and is easy to use, but it also has height as well as range, so it is easy to hit enemies in high positions.
- hurricane bomb
- wind bomb. The blast is cross-shaped. It looks circular at first glance, but there is no hit detection other than a tornado that flies in a cross pattern.
- A convenient bomb that does not cause damage even if the blast hits Bomberman.
- Instead, Bomberman who is hit by the blast will fly straight away until he hits something, so you need to look around and use it.
- You can also use this shortcut to solve mysteries.
- Lightning bomb
- lightning bomb. The blast is cross-shaped.
- Unlike a flame bomb, the blast wave does not bend, is not affected by gravity, and can penetrate obstacles. In addition to being able to short-circuit mechanical enemies and deal great damage, it is also useful when turning on machines.
- napalm bomb
- .Earth...or rather, a magma bomb. The blast is cross-shaped.
- It has great destructive power and a wide attack range. Even the initial firepower, level 1, is enough to burn down small enemies.
- However, you cannot place the next bomb until the blast wave subsides, so it may be a little difficult to use when the firepower is high.
- It can destroy metal pillars and doors that cannot be destroyed with regular bombs, and can lift some scaffolding.
- mute bomb
- bomb of light. The blast is circular.
- You can stop moving scaffolding. It also shows its power against immortals, and can literally defeat them instantly with a blast.
- gravity bomb
- Dark bomb. The blast is circular.
- You can destroy special walls with enemy organization emblems on them. Judging from the performance, it seems like they are forcibly sucking it in.
- Creates a black hole that swallows all enemies except those with resistance and defeats them in one blow. The main force at the end.
- It swallows not only enemies but also items. Naturally, Bomberman also swallows it. If you are swallowed, the game is over without any questions asked.
- The story tends to grab your attention, but the battle mode has also been greatly enhanced. You can have fun with 5 unique rules and 8 types for each rule, for a total of 24 types of maps.
- However, in the early stages, only survival is required, and for the rest, you need to clear level 3 of the challenge battle for each rule.
- Skull items have great significance. Since the advantageous effects account for a little less than half of its effects, its character has changed to become more of a gambling item than a negative item. This gives rise to the significance of taking the skull yourself. Devil items have also been used since the previous game, so there are many opportunities to overturn the difference in ability. You never know what will happen, and it's fun as a battle tool.
- Also, in the series, there is a ``shinigami that is quite a special symptom. This itself does not cause anything to happen during the skull effect, but when the skull's validity period ends, regardless of whether or not you have hearts, you will always die in Survival, and under other rules you will be forced to self-destruct, which is a death penalty. When someone catches this, there is not a panic caused by the skull's symptoms themselves, but a negotiation about when to take advantage of the other person.
- The coop adventure mode is great, and it's the first Bomberman game that makes the player play another character than a Bomber character.
- It's can also make the game even more fun, especially in the boss battles, it's would also kill a lot of hours.
- The voice acting is once again great, even in the English version, as it's keeping the Japanese voices, which make everything better. Unfortunately, it's mostly gibberish from Pommy and Bomberman when he gets hit, and they haven't done voice acting for the dialogues, which is a missed opportunity, just like Bomberman Hero.
- The battle mode is improved from the first Bomberman 64 due to the level design being more huge than the first game; it's also an improvement over some Super Bomberman games battle mode.
- Due to how fun the game is, it's barely aged and is still very fun to play today, which can't be said about many Nintendo 64 games despite being a great console.
- The fun is almost everywhere in this game, like in both single players and 2 players mode.
- Due to how fun and awesome the game is, it's can even be considered to be one of the absolute best games on the console, despite the negatives reviews at the times by the critics.
- The game is also fun and great to speedrun due to how great the gameplay is, and the game is sometime even builded with the speedrunning, and due to that, the game can be considered to be very fast paced, even more than Bomberman Hero and the first Bomberman 64 game.
- If you found some hidden armor pieces that will allow Bomberman to kick bombs without needing the bomb kick item, the ability to throw and pump bombs without the throw item, and the ability to use remote bombs without need of the remote bomb item, which is an innovative idea for a Bomberman game, even compared to Bomberman Hero, where it's innovative to make Bomberman a platformer.
- The game inspired to make a bit more Bomberman adventure games, like Bomberman Generation and Bomberman Jetter on PS2/GameCube which was unfortunately the last Bomberman adventure game to date, not counting Super Bomberman R2.
Bad Qualities
- The game is very expensive nowadays due to its release late in the Nintendo 64 lifespan and the mediocre reviews, and for a complete copy of the game, it can go for 2000 dollars! Fortunately, the emulation now exist and you can emulate that version easily.
- The North American version has an issue with the emulator. What are the problems? The stick can make it impossible to move other than up and down; this makes the game almost unplayable in the emulator. Fortunately,if you change the D-Pad, it'll work better.
- And to make everything worse, the cartridge is very expensive, as said in BQ #1.
- The Japanese version is not as great as the North American version because Bomberman is a lot slower than in the US release, because there is no tutorial mode, and because when you die, you can't continue with the power-ups you collected, which makes this version have artificial difficulty. Also, it's not as fun as the North American version, and due to these flaws, that version of the game can be considered mediocre compared to the awesome North American version.
- The fact that Bomberman is slower in this version can also be a major problem when you are in a boss battle or a very hard level; it's almost like they wanted to do the Mega Man & Bass of the Bomberman series.
- The first boss "Belfell" is quite strong, regardless of the path.
- The stage is small and Bomberman will die instantly if he falls off the stage. Furthermore, although it flies at a slow speed, it shoots out flames that are quite wide, and sometimes uses instant death attacks. It's so strong that you can't believe it's the first one. Furthermore, unlike Baku Bomberman , even if the boss falls off the stage, it will return with no damage.
- Another reason why it is said to be so strong is that the remote control for the Balance Breaker item cannot be used in all boss battles and in all of the "Gravity Control Device Rooms" below. To become invincible during the attack, you need to aim for opportunities such as when you are moving, but this is not easy as the room is small. In normal play, situations such as losing 1 life when you trade trades often occur.
- It's tough that the land advantage is completely suppressed. In a game magazine review at the time, there were complaints that the first boss was too strong, resulting in low overall scores.
- The boss "Bephimos" of "Water Planet Aquanet", which can be selected after clearing Alcatraz, is a formidable enemy although not as strong as Belfel. He has a long invincibility period when firing ice bullets during attacks, and even if he places a bomb, he will not be able to do much damage, and because he moves often, he can often avoid the blast of a storage bomb. Unlike other bosses, his instant death move is not a rush, but a beam that goes halfway around the field. He also has a long invincibility time, and it's quite difficult to aim for a detonation right after the attack ends.
- Also, because he's so big, he fires a beam. You won't faint even if you hit it, and be careful of the icicles that fall unexpectedly .
- The boss "Astaroth" of the other "Wind Planet Horizon" is quite weak, as he repeatedly moves at high speed to the four corners of the field, so if you place a bomb there in advance, he will often rush into the blast and self-destruct. The top of the stage is a safe zone. You can attack it one-sidedly by kicking the bomb from there. In any case, as long as you're on the platform, you won't take any damage, so if you don't rush and fight slowly, anyone can win. By the way, his special move, lunge, is also the slowest...
- However, if you look at them as a whole, they are all the ones with the fiercest attacks in the past series.
- The boss "Moloch" of "Earth Planet Neverland" has a solid pattern of hitting the ground → being stunned and unable to move → tackle ( 2 damage ). Avoidance is almost impossible.
- Basically, in this game (and version), there is an invincibility period immediately after receiving damage, but Moloch's tackle is a throwing technique . Even though it was time for invincibility, he was carried on his back and thrown against the wall without any questions asked . By the time he gets slammed into the wall, his invincibility time is over...
- Moreover, no matter how hard you try, you can only get two of the essential Guardian Suits. Not being able to obtain the third stun resistance up seems like harassment.
- In fact, it is currently possible to obtain the third and subsequent Guardian Suit at this stage using a trick method, but using this method will hinder item completion, and it will be bad for players who realized this method under the environment at the time. There probably wasn't.
- You will face Beelzebal, the boss of the Exile Planet Death Star, at the top of a skyscraper, but her only attacks are 2 damage moves or instant death moves . What's more, while other bosses have one rush attack that they use when their remaining health is low, this boss has two instant death attacks. One of them, Black Hole, not only uses it regardless of its remaining health, but also uses it as a counterattack when it receives damage, and it chases Bomberman. It would be nice if they could escape, but if they are cornered on the edge, they will fall and die , or be swallowed up by a black hole and die . If her health is low, she may even combine two types of instant death attacks.
- Rush, another instant death attack, is also the fastest among the bosses, and can be said to be the strongest in name and reality among the enemy executives. If you're not good at it, you'll be stronger than the final boss undercard you fight in her last stage.
- However, following the previous game, this boss battle can be called a revenge for Beelzebal, and although it is a classic story of a rival he once defeated training himself and seriously challenging him, it is also a very fiery development. Partly because he wasn't that strong in the previous game,
- Among the bombs that can be used are wind bombs, which are useful in boss battles because they do 0 self-destruction damage instead of being blown away when hit by the blast. However, the battle against Beelzebal mentioned above takes place at the top of a skyscraper, so of course there are no walls around it, so if you use a wind bomb and get caught in the blast, you will fall outside and die instantly . The killing at first sight was also terrible.
- If the game ends in a boss battle, you will return to the initial position without any items. Although the trick has been solved, you will have to walk back to the boss's location while collecting items.
- Bosses other than Befimos will charge at you and use instant death moves when their remaining health is low, but if you've gotten this far, it's only natural that you've almost won. This is because it will charge after gathering its power, so if you place a bomb on the spot and run away from the boss while avoiding being caught in the blast, you will receive damage on your own. So all you have to do is avoid it until it attacks.
- As for Bephimos, it collects its power, then fires a laser, slowly rotates 180 degrees on the spot, and burns out about half of the field. However, if you know where the irradiation ends, you can simply place a bomb there and it will detonate.
- Still, the problem is that the barrier to reducing physical strength is too high. Also, the enemy's charging speed is much faster than the player's movement speed, so if you are careless about where to place the bomb or what direction to run away from, you may find yourself being hit by an opponent's attack even if you think you are avoiding it at a right angle. . It's not enough just to run around.
- As a countermeasure, you can stop by a shop when selecting a world and use the money you earn in the world to learn the boss's behavior pattern and damage amount, or increase your maximum physical strength. However, before clearing "Abandoned Planet Alcatraz", you can only learn about Belfel's behavioral patterns. It is not possible to increase the maximum physical strength, and you are forced to fight with the initial physical strength of 5 life.
- The reason lies in the game's system. In this game, you can only save when you clear a world or when you go shopping, and there are no intermediate saves. If you quit midway through the world, you'll have to start over from where you saved (if you haven't cleared a single stage, you can only choose ``Abandoned Planet Alcatraz and the shop). Therefore, before clearing Alcatraz, you are always broke and cannot buy anything ( *4 ) .
- In other words, you need to beat all worlds non-stop. On top of that, each world is pretty long, so it's easy to spend an hour to trying beating one world.
- Also, when collecting custom parts in a cleared world, you will need to clear the world once you have taken the parts. However, most of the tricks have been conquered, so all you need to do is go to the "Gravity Control Device" room (described later), which is the goal point of each world.
- Also, just like the boss, the ``gravity control device that awaits you at the end of each world (excluding the final world) is as tough as the boss. Destroying the device will clear the world, but this may be the most difficult part. It requires a lot of mental play.
- In the second half, the number of types of bombs that can be used increases, and the puzzles become more complex. Furthermore, as mentioned above, there are no intermediate saves, so if you turn off the power, you 'll have to start all over again from the end of that world . Of course, the boss also needs to be defeated again.
- The difficulty due to all these problems is a nightmare due to how slow Bomberman is, in fact it's might be the hardest Bomberman game ever made (in the japanese version only).
- While he is cute most of the time, Pommy can be unlikable sometimes, such as when he mocks Bomberman because of the fact that he can't swim, and even worse in those levels; he said that often in the middle of the levels.
- He can also be rather annoying, especially his AL, which is not perfect, but at least it doesn't ruin the game, like Crash Twinsanity (which was released later).
- While the true final boss (and even the alternate one) is epic and awesome, that boss fight can be very frustrating because it's attacks are hard to dodge most of the time, and that battle drags on for too long, some even take 8 to 10 minutes to beat the boss.
- Its strength is not half-baked, with a variety of attacks that are difficult to avoid, the chance to inflict damage only for a short time after the attack, flexible movements, and the inability to use the remote control . He has even been called "The Strongest Boss" and "Hudson's Player Killer. " Some people even felt that it was the ``best action game.
- Even if you look at the only official strategy book on sale, it just says, ``Fight for the peace of the universe, risk your life!!... and throws away the strategy.
- For the time being, it says that there are attack patterns and attack methods, and that you should use ice bombs, but it doesn't mention the important evasion method or the use of darkness bombs from the middle.
- As damage is dealt, the attack pattern changes to the first form, second form, and third form.
- As its form changes, it will begin to unleash multiple attacks without interruption, and its strength will rapidly increase. A combo that involves lightning attacks is a beast (although it's not 100% unavoidable).
- Furthermore, in its third form, it shoots out a huge light bullet that bounces off the wall and pursues Bomberman forever . It's not fast, but it doesn't disappear even if it takes damage. The only way to erase it is to hit it with a dark bomb. There is a limit to killing at first sight. This attack wiped out many players who thought that if they kept running away, they would disappear someday. Of course, even if you know how to deal with it, if you try to self-destruct as mentioned above, you'll die instantly, so you can't do it carelessly.
- Actually, a certain event scene is a small hint...but did anyone notice that it was a hint?
- The Angel of Holy and Evil unleashes a fairly ferocious attack, but surprisingly, all the damage it takes is 1 . ( *5 ) Many players who looked down on it and said, ``What, it's 1 damage, so I can afford it were plunged into despair.
- If you lose this battle, you will have to start over from the previous boss. Although they are not very strong opponents, their firepower, bombs, and movement speed are at their initial state, so fighting bosses while collecting items is useful enough to reduce the player's concentration and energy. However, if you defeat the previous boss, the event scenes in between will be cut out, which is a relief.
- In fact, even in this final level, it is currently possible to take a major shortcut using a trick, but if you lose using this method, you will have to start over from the beginning of the dungeon, and the mid-boss battle described below will be cut out. If the good ED conditions are met, it will be fixed to the boss of the good ED route, otherwise it will be fixed to the boss of the normal ED route, and like the Guardian Suit trick mentioned above, players who noticed this method at the time
- The game was unfortunately not released in Europe, and for the worst of it, the game was never and will probably never be re-released, which is a problem due to how expensive the game is nowadays, it's also don't help that it's wasn't released as a virtual console game on Wii U.
- In the boss fight, the remote bombs are disabled. This could be intentional for not making the boss fight too easy, but still.
- If you lose a life when you fight Mihaele at the end of the game, you will automatically get the bad ending, and you can't fight the true final boss if that happens. Thankfully, you can still load an older save file, but you will have to restart the entire level just to get another chance to beat her without getting an instant kill, which can be incredibly tiresome.
- The game receives terrible advertising to the point of making it a commercial failure; it's gone to the point that they haven't done ads for promoting the game, there aren't that many magazines that talk about the game (except Nintendo Power), and the mixed reviews haven't helped to make the game hyped back in the day.
- The instant KO of the boss are rather unfair as they instantly kill you and you will need to restart these boss battles a lot if you have trouble with these.
- Pommy don't fight during boss battles
- During important situations, such as boss battles, he just trembles in the corner of the room. Cooperative play is not possible.
- During the final boss fight, he talks about being energetic, but he still trembles and doesn't move. There is no sense of solidarity, and it can be said that the strong point of this game, which is the ability to play collaboratively, is lost.
- However, if Pomyu's attacks don't work, the result will be the same, and there is only about one form of Pomyu that can generate hearts on its own...

Reception
While Bomberman 64: The Second Attack! received mixed reviews from critics, it's received extremely positive reviews from players and Bomberman fans alike due to the story, graphics, and other great things about the game. The game currently has a 3.96 score on GameFaqs[1]. The game got a score of 69% on GameRanking[2]. It's also considered to be the best Bomberman game on the system and even considered to be the best out of the Nintendo 64 and GameCube Bomberman games, it's sometime even considered to be the best Bomberman game ever made along with Saturn Bomberman, it's also somewhat got a cult following despite not being as cult as the first Bomberman 64, it's also considered to be one of the best games on the Nintendo 64 by players.
Trivia
- Despite the fact that the army is called "BHB Army", it's never actually revealed what "BHB Army" means. Some guess it leans toward "Black Hole Base".
- Although Pommy appeared in more games (namely Generation and Jetters), he barely spoke afterwards. Special machines are needed to be used to achieve most of Pommy's forms in later games, replacing The Second Attack!'s food mechanic. Food items returned in Bomberman Generation and Bomberman Jetters, but their function is to simply fill up an experience bar for each Charabom without any branching evolutionary paths.
- Just like in the original Bomberman 64, the "Baku" kanji character is retained on the title screen in the American version, despite the title change.
- Strangely, voice-acting-wise, the dialogue remains in Japanese for the Western release.
- This was the last Bomberman game for the North America to be released since the 2001 version of Bomberman 64 was only released in Japan and was a port of Bomberman Land on the PS1, which was also only released in Japan.
Game Tips
- For playing the North America version on emulators (especially on mobile phone), choose the d pad for not getting the direction blocked bug on emulators, even if it's make you got less mouvements, the game is still beatable.
- If you get instant kill by Lilith in her boss battle, just reload your save file as it's will not be saved and you will get another chance to beat her. Howewer, you will also need to replay the entire level again.
- Choose and stick to the North America version for the best experience with the game, due to being faster and more easier than the Japanese version.
Regional Differences
Bomberman 64: The Second Attack has several alterations between the US and Japanese releases:
- The Japanese Main Menu has no tutorial mode; this was added to the US version.
- A "Skip Demo" option was also included in the US version's options menu.
- Story Mode cutscenes during repeated playthroughs on the US version can be skipped over by beating the game once, while the Japanese version doesn't allow this.
- The Japanese intro has chunks of text that scroll and stop for awhile; the US intro has separated text with constant scrolling.
- The Japanese version's pause screen overlay is a black square with the world map, and the ability to exit worlds is only obtained by completing that world once. The US version would resize this overlay to fit in with the screen while implementing additional functions. (Lives count; R button to access Options; exit world.)
- Gameplay-wise, the Japanese version is harder and very unforgiving; Bomberman's movement speed is much slower; even with Skates obtained, getting a game over results in losing all of the power-ups equipped (Fire Up, Bomb Up, Power Glove, Kick), and continuing will not give them back. The US version circumvents both of these by increasing Bomberman's speed and offering 3 lives that allow continuing with power-ups intact but lose them entirely once all 3 lives are depleted.
- Baelfael, Ashtarth, and Behemos each have an instant-KO attack in their Japanese boss fights; these were removed in the US version to lower their difficulty.
