Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese is an American-French-Irish animated television series developed from an original concept by Jeff Harter (who also created Packages From Planet X), and is an international co-production between Cloudco Entertainment, WatchNext Media, and Kavaleer Productions, and produced with the support of Gulli, Canal J, BBC, RTE, and De Agostini Editore S.p.A.

The series originally premiered in the United Kingdom on CBBC on 31 October 2019. In June 2019, the series was renewed for a second season before the series premiered.

Plot

The show centers around a boy, a girl, a dog, a cat, a mouse, and a piece of cheese, all respectively named after what they are, who are living together as a dysfunctional family.

Why They're Family

  1. The concept of a dysfunctional family with abnormal family members living together and trying to get along is not new, but this show puts a unique twist on it by having the members of the family be of different species. As it focuses on a blended family similarly to The Brady Bunch and especially bears a resemblance to the famous The Loud House, one can say it is a refreshed, modern version of a timeless concept.
  2. Like these five shows, it uses the slice of life format very well.
  3. Catchy and short theme song which puts the viewers in the mood for the show.
  4. Likeable characters such as of course, the main six characters of the series!
    • Boy is gentle, kind-hearted, innocent, and sensitive. He doesn't like it when the other members of his family get into fights and, aside from being passionate about his love for bobbleheads, he learns how to cook, and make chemistry and he's helpful like when he helped an old lady in one episode of the series. The happiness of both himself and others is his greatest priority.
    • Girl is a leader with a rambunctious and rebellious edge. She takes many actions during times of crisis and is not afraid to take risks.
    • Dog is athletic, energetic, and obedient, always doing as he is told.
    • Cat is pure comic relief. She's wacky and unfazed by happenings around her most of the time, and though she is often oblivious to situations, she never fails to make others laugh.
    • Mouse is practical and scientific, and the rational one of the bunch. He makes inventions that sometimes backfire, but are always made with good intentions.
    • Cheese is a girly diva who loves being at the center of attention. To her, all the world's a stage and she is the superstar shining on that stage. She is ambitious and has big dreams of fame, and is very extroverted.
  5. The Flash animation is very fluid and stylistic.
  6. Very funny jokes in almost every episode. Visual and verbal gags are used, such as characters making funny faces or characters like Boy or Cheese making goofy remarks.
  7. The voice acting for the characters sounds very talented with well-put effort into the characters.
  8. Beautiful art style. The character designs serve as a way to convey the characters' personalities well.
  9. Great soundtrack, especially the title theme and the music in the transition.
  10. Many episodes contain heartwarming moments and morals which the viewers can learn from; for instance, one episode focuses on how you're never too old to love the things you're passionate about even if they seem "immature," and another focuses on how you shouldn't betray others or else it could lead to dangerous consequences.

Not Family Qualities

  1. Cheese (and Cat, to an extent) can get annoying sometimes.
  2. The family members are not the best role models; they can get into some big arguments which lead to them exhibiting bad behavior and drama arising. However, episodes like this are used to teach morals.
  3. Lip syncing can be mediocre sometimes.
  4. The fact that the main characters don't have proper names, while other characters do can be painfully weird.

Reception

Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese currently holds a 6.8/10 on IMDb and a 86% rating on Google.

Trivia

  • The show has not yet received an official release in the United States despite its main production company Cloudco and the voice cast hailing from there.
